Offer Description

Persistent contaminants are an issue of growing concern due to the intrinsic difficulties associated to their removal, which put in danger any policy for wastewater cleaning and subsequent water recovery and reuse. Anaerobic ceramic-supported carbon membrane (CSCM) bioreactors integrate, in a single unit, biodegradation and filtration of the effluents, where the carbonaceous layer plays a triple role as pollutant adsorbent, support for the biofilm, and electron shuttle for the redox bioreactions carried out by  anaerobic microorganisms. This concept of bioreactor has already been demonstrated in our previous research, but it needs further development to increase its productivity and widen its applicability. The proposal draws an innovative evolution where it will be implemented using ceramic capillary membranes as support of either the carbonaceous or the graphene oxide layer. Compared to tubular membranes, capillary fibers give a surface to volume ratio one order of magnitude higher, around 500 m2/m3, which increase the productivity at the level necessary for use at high scale with competitive cost. Due to the special conditions of the microscopic environment, modelling of the process will be conducted under its low flow conditions.

We look for a highly motivated candidate to follow doctoral studies. A background on Chemical Engineering will be strongly appreciated although knowledge in the areas of Materials, Chemistry and Mathematics will also help to reach the objectives of the research project. Good level of English to prepare scientific documents is also demanded.
