JOB POSITION: PRE-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER (I-PI 24-24)

ANNOUNCEMENt of the University of Alicante to call for applications to cover a temporary contractual pre-doctoral research position to collaborate with the project “Atlas of desertification in Spain” of the Ramón Margalef Multidisciplinary Institute for Environmental Research. Reference: I-PI 24-24

Project I184 funded by the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge through the funding programme launched by the Biodiversity Foundation in the framework of the corresponding Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan – funded by the European Union-NextGenerationEU

In accordance with the Regulations governing calls for applications of research staff to cover contractual research positions and the selection procedures, approved by the Governing Council of 29 June 2021 (BOUA of 30 June 2021) and with instructions of the University of Alicante Offices of the Registrar and the Comptroller, which establish the mandatory use of electronic means for the submission of applications, documentation, payment of fees, communications, notifications and all other procedures of the selection procedures for the temporary contractual administrative and services staff and research staff as well as other generally applicable regulations, the University of Alicante announces a call for applications with the following terms and conditions:

First. Number of vacancies and features of the job position

1.1. Number of vacancies: one.

1.2. Job position: Pre-doctoral Researcher.

1.3. Working hours: 37.5 hours a week in morning/afternoon sessions.

1.4. Remuneration: € 1.800 gross/monthly (plus extra payments in accordance with curren regualtions).

1.5 Estimated duration ofh the contract: From the contract signing until 31 Decembrer 2025.

In any case, the duration of the contract will depend on the duration of the project and its budgetary availability.

In accordance with the provisions of the agreemente of the Governing Council of 27 January 2022, which approves the 4th University of Alicante Equal Opportunities Plan for Women and Men, it is hereby stated that there is no under-representation of either gener in teh category of Pre-doctoral Researcher.

Second. Purpose

Collaborate in the research project “Atlas of desertification in Spain (I184)” through doctoral training in the Regional Geographic Analysis area, with the aim of pursuing a doctoral thesis, performing the following tasks:

• Gathering of information related to land use, climate projections, thematic cartography and desertification on different scales.
• Use of databases containing information on variables related to the problem, in particular databases of agricultural crops based on intensive irrigation.
• Use of software for making maps (GIS) and processing images.
• Use of databases and software for making climate projections in relation to desertification processes.
• Bibliographic search for desertification cases in Spain.
• Identification of landscapes affected by desertification in Spain and creation of a typology based on the making of maps.
• Analysis of the information obtained for:

(i) Processing data to evaluate how land use has changed in Spain over the last 20 years.

(ii) Processing climate change scenarios to evaluate the problem addressed in the project.

(iii) Proposing and implementing desertification indicators.

(iv) Making maps of desertification based on the analysis of the case studies included in the project.

(v) Designing a cartographic portal for the final presentation of the project results.

(vi) Writing scientific articles in indexed journals as well as texts for scientific dissemination purposes.

• Any other task related to this job position as may arise from the implementation of the project.

Third. Job profile

Preference will be given to those candidates with:

3.1. Proven experience and training related to the tasks mentioned above and to:

• Software for cartographic design (ArcGIS, ArcMap, ArcGis Pro, QGis, gvSig).
• Software for database processing (PostGIS, R, Excel).
• Climate projections and modelling.
• Climate change and desertification.
• Landscapes affected by desertification in Spain.
• Writing of scientific works and reports.
• Use of statistics and data on changes in land use.

3.2. Qualification: Official Master’s Degree in Geographic Information Technology, Official Master’s Degree in Planning and Management of Natural Hazards or any other official Master’s degree with equivalent content.

Fourth. Requirements for applicants

Compliance with the requirements listed below must always refer to the date of expiry of the deadline for the submission of applications, and must be maintained until the date of entering into the contract. Applicants must.

4.1. Hold or be in the process of obtaining an undergraduate degree in Geography (or Geography & Land Planning) plus an official Master’s degree in Geographic Information Technology or any other with equivalent content.

4.2. Meet the academic requirements necessary for admission to the PhD programme in Arts at the University of Alicante. The document accrediting admission to such a doctoral programme must be submitted when entering into the contract.

4.3. Not be holders of a PhD, whether from a Spanish or foreign university.

4.4. Be a Spanish national or be in one of the situations listed in article 57 of Royal Legislative Decree 5/2015, of 30 October, which approves the revised text of the Act on the Basic Statute of Public Employees (BOE of 31 October). In the case established in point 4 of this article, when entering into the employment contract, the successful applicant must be a legal resident in Spain.

4.5. Be at least 16 years of age and not exceed the maximum compulsory retirement age.

4.6. Possess the physical and mental capacities and aptitudes that are necessary for the performance of the corresponding functions or tasks, for which, prior to the signing of the contract, a medical certificate must be provided certifying the possession of said capacities and aptitudes. For these purposes, medical examinations may be carried out through the medical assistance provided by the University of Alicante Occupational Health Service.

4.7. Must not have been dismissed by disciplinary proceedings from the service of any of the Public Administrations or of the constitutional or statutory bodies of the Spanish Autonomous Regions, nor have been totally or specially disqualified for public employment by a court decision, for access to the civil service, or to perform duties similar to those performed by non-tenured staff in public administrations, in which they had been dismissed or disqualified. If you are a national of another State, you must not be in a situation of disqualification or equivalent, nor have been subjected to a disciplinary or equivalent sanction that prevents, under the same terms, access to public employment in your State.
