Pre-doc Researcher in Computational Glycobiology

Updated: about 2 years ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 28 Feb 2022

Professor Carme Rovira is looking for one PhD student to work in computational glycobiology. The student will be applying state-of-art computational methods to model glycans of the human mucosa–microbiota interface. The successful candidate will work on the Sweet Crosstalk European Training Network, running since January 2019 (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/814102 ).

Sweet Crosstalk (SCT) is a multidisciplinary European Training Network built to address the challenge of understanding, at a molecular level, how glycans are involved at the human mucosa–microbiota interface, and how this correlates with human well-being. The research strategy of the Sweet Crosstalk programme focuses on optimal synergy between chemistry and biology. In the network the expertise ranges from chemical synthesis, biochemistry, structural biology to microbiology and cell biology. The SCT network is composed of 7 academic groups that are all renowned leaders in the glycoscience and microbiome fields, whereas the complementary 4 companies are specialized in glycan-based diagnostics and prophylactic therapies. The Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) trained in this network will become the new generation of innovative scientists with expert knowledge and skills in interdisciplinary glycoscience and human microbiome research.

The perspective researcher will address complex enzyme reaction mechanisms and glycan-protein interactions by means of sophisticated computational methods and algorithms (ab initio molecular dynamics, quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics methodologies and enhanced sampling techniques). The successful candidate will join the dynamic research group of Prof. Rovira within the Institute of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry and the Department of Chemistry. He/she will work in a sophisticated HPC environment, will have access to systems and computational infrastructures, and will be involved in local collaborations with experts in different areas of computational chemistry, as well as international collaboration with other groups of the SCT consortium.

The position is available from May 1st , 2022 for a duration of ten months. The position will be based at the Chemistry Department of the UB in Barcelona, Spain.
