Offer Description
We are looking for a highly motivated researcher with a PhD in computational biomedical engineering, ideally related to physiological modelling in cardiovascular or neurological applications, willing to do research at the leading edge of biomedical engineering.
A 2-year postdoctoral position (additional 1-2 years are possible) is available at the BCN MedTech Research Unit (https://www.upf.edu/web/bcn-medtech/ ), Department of Information & Communication Technologies (DTIC) of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), Barcelona, Spain. The candidate will contribute as a researcher in two European projects where the Physense group leads several work-packages in heart-brain fluid simulations and thrombus modelling. Ideally, the candidate should start the position during the 1st trimester of 2024.
During the last years, Physense has become a leading research group on fluid simulations of the left atria to derive in-silico indices for the risk of thrombus formation, obtaining funding from different national and international projects in collaboration with an extensive network of academic, industrial, and clinical partners. An example is the SimCardioTest EU project (https://www.simcardiotest.eu ), which has the main goal of building the credibility of physiological simulations required for being part of in-silico trials.
The Physense research group leads the use case on left atrial appendage occluder devices, following the V&V40 standards, to help optimizing device settings. Within the SimCardioTest project, the candidate will work on modelling the thrombus formation process, coupled with fluid simulations, as well as the interaction with drug treatment (e.g., anticoagulants). Additionally, the candidate will be involved in in-vitro experiments for the validation of fluid simulations, which is led by international collaborators.
A new EU project, GEMINI, has been granted with Physense as a key partner, to develop systemic models of the heart-brain system to support medical decisions in stroke patients. In GEMINI, neurology and cardiology clinical and engineering specialists will work together to build multi-scale heart-brain vascular models, coupled with thrombus simulations. The candidate will work on building the heart-brain fluid models and validate thrombus simulations, as well as exploring ways for accelerating computational models.

Specific Requirements
High motivation is the only essential pre-requisite; our top-quality research standards demand hard work, which only strong motivation and commitment can ensure. Candidates must have excellent teamwork and communication skills and be enthusiastic about collaborating with a diverse range of international partners. We expect them to be fluent in oral and, particularly, writing English, as it will be the language used to interrelate with the different partners. Interest in clinical translation is essential since meetings with clinicians will regularly take place.
