Offer Description
Context And Mission

The Atmospheric Composition group from the Earth Sciences department at the BSC-CNS is looking for a postdoctoral researcher responsible for the maintenance and scientific developments of the in-house emission modeling tools, including the global and bottom-up modules of the High-Elective Resolution Modelling Emission System (HERMESv3_GR and HERMESv3_BU), as well as a new national emission model for supporting Spanish air quality modeling research that will be developed within a large initiative on the “Modernization of observation networks and digitalization of production processes for the development of intelligent meteorological services in the context of climate change” in the framework of the European Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan funded by the European Union - Next Generation EU.

The position will oversee the maintenance, review and updates of the databases and estimation methodologies implemented in the different emission modelling systems, perform sensitivity tests and intercomparison exercises against independent emission datasets, as well as provide support for the use and application of the emission tools in the context of modelling activities such as CAMS or CALIOPE. The postdoctoral researcher will also work on the characterization of air pollutants of emerging concern and its associated emission sources (e.g., NH3, BC, UFP, VOC) making use of traditional bottom-up approaches.

The applicant will work closely with atmospheric scientists and computational engineers that will support the interpretation and analysis of the emission results obtained and the technical development of the tool.

Key Duties

  • Update and develop the databases underpinning the emission modeling tools.
  • Develop methodologies to update and improve emission estimates, with a focus on air pollutants of emerging concern and its associated emission sources (e.g., NH3, BC, UFP, VOC).
  • Provide quality assessment, evaluation and services of the emission modelling tools.
  • Support the implementation and application of the emission modelling tools in the context of air quality modelling activities.
  • Evaluate emission estimates using air quality modeling techniques and state-of-the-art in situ measurements.
  • Participate in the writing of papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Requirements

  • Education
    • A Ph.D. degree in environmental engineering, physics, data science, remote sensing or similar.
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience in atmospheric emissions and characterization of emission sources.
    • Experience in the development of bottom-up emission inventories, emission inventory intercomparison and evaluation of emission estimates by means of air quality modelling.
    • Demonstrated scientific expertise, including but not limited to a record of scholarly publications.
    • Experience in programming and code development (python, R).
    • Originality and critical thinking in assessing the quality of data from different sources.
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • At least 2 years experience in similar fields.
  • Competences
    • Very good interpersonal skills.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines.
    • Ability to work both independently and within a team.
    • Ability to initiate and maintain extensive contacts within the scientific community.
