African leishmaniasis: From clinical research to Access – LeishAccess (GA RIA2020S-3301)

The general objective of the project is to carry out the complete sequencing of the genome of multiple strains of Leishmania aethiopica isolated from patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis included in a clinical trial to be carried out in Ethiopia to determine the feasibility of the use of thermotherapy for the treatment of leishmaniasis skin in that region.

The specific objectives are: 1.- Establish correlations between the genotype of the parasite, the pathology of the lesion and the response to treatment. 2. - Study the epidemiology, structure and population dynamics of L. aethiopica in the study area. 3.- Evaluate the prevalence and impact of Leishmania virus - LRV on the response to treatment and the pathology of cutaneous leishmaniasis lesions, its relationship with the parasite's virulence and its possible role in the protection/susceptibility to the development of cutaneous leishmaniasis
