The Science and Technology Park Foundation (FCPCT) of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) - Spain offers one researcher position (ICP2 MECES 3) to work in the EU COMBAT project.

The University Institute of Biomedical and Healthcare Research (iUIBS) is the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria research centre in the biomedical, biotechnological, hospital and social-healthcare area. It brings together university research groups, hospital research groups, public centre research units and collaborating researchers.
COMBAT project has been funded by Horizon 2020 Programme (H2020), through the Grant Agreement number 101000467, signed by the European Commission on 26/05/2021 and in which ULPGC is partner of the consortium. The estimated end date of the project is 31/08/2025.

The EU-funded COMBAT project aims to reduce the burden of animal trypanosomosis using the concept of progressive control pathway. COMBAT will improve basic knowledge on the infection and develop innovative control tools. Furthermore, it will improve surveillance and reporting, and produce guidelines for national control strategies. Capacity building and awareness raising activities will increase the sustainability of the project.

The University will recruit the best candidate following the recommendations of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. The job offer will be published through a wide range of portals. The evaluation of candidates and their selection criteria will be aligned with the ULPGC policies on equal opportunities. Skills/Qualifications

The work and responsibilities of the researcher will include the following research topics:

  • Placement and removal of tramps in livestock farming or natural environments.
  • Taxonomic identification of collected insect vectors, their classification, collection, and database preparation.
  • Collaboration in sample collections in livestock farming or natural environments.
  • Implementation of molecular biology techniques to identify vectors and to detect the parasite.
  • Implementation of diagnostic techniques (ELISA, PCR, etc.)
  • Geolocation of tramps, farms, animals and vector in order to create an atlas.
  • Assistance and participation in online and on-site project meetings with different task groups.
  • Participation in technical report writing, scientific publications and dissemination material.
  • Development of good laboratory practices: control and security in a biological and chemical laboratory.
  • Inventory laboratory control (consumables, chemical products, equipment.)
  • Handling, maintenance and calibration of measuring equipment.
  • Organization and management of project sample files.
  • Monitoring and writing of standard operating procedures (SOP).
  • Management and document control of equipment, consumables, protocols and database analysis.
  • Support in training and dissemination project tasks.
  • Data statistical processing.
  • Participation in 2-3 days travels to other islands of the region to place tramps and collect samples.

Specific Requirements

Candidates must comply with the following conditions:

1. Nationality:

  • Spanish nationality or that of one of the other member states of the European Union.
  • Whatever his/her nationality, spouses of Spaniards and nationals of other Member States of the European Union.
  • People included into International Agreements concluded by the European Union and ratified by Spain, related to free movement of workers.
  • Foreign candidates not included in the above paragraphs, legally resident in Spain.

2. Age: Be over eighteen.

3. Degree in Veterinary Medicine, Biology, Medicine, Pharmacy, Biotechnology, Environmental Sciences (MECES 3).

4. Driving licence.

Benefits

This contract is related to specific work and services to be developed by the ULPGC in the context of COMBAT project.

1. Type of contract: Indefinite-term contract for scientific-technical activities, based on article 23 bis of Law 14/2011, of 1 June, on Science, Technology and Innovation, and other regulatory regulations.

2. The purpose of this contract is to carry out activities related to the COMBAT project, whose thematic area is linked to the research line called Trypanosomosis of the ULPGC, a project which the ULPGC is developing by virtue of the grant agreement nº 101000467 signed on 26/05/2021 with the European Commission and whose estimated completion date is 31/08/2025. 

3. Incorporation planned for April 2024.

4. The staff to be recruited through this call for proposals with an indefinite contract is not considered permanent staff under any circumstances. The awarding of the employment contract does not imply any commitment on the part of this Foundation, the University or its dependent entities as to the subsequent incorporation of the interested party into the staff of these entities.

5. The contract may be terminated for any of the reasons provided for in Royal Legislative Decree 2/2015, of 23 October, approving the revised text of the Workers' Statute Law, or in the rest of the applicable legislation, paying special attention to letter e) of article 52 of the aforementioned RDL 2/2015: insufficiency of the financial allocation of the corresponding appropriation for the maintenance of the employment contract.

6. The dedication will be 37.5 hours per week, with exclusive dedication to the project being essential.

7. The gross monthly remuneration will amount to 1.942,55 €/month (including the proportional part of the special payments).

8. The place of work will be at the facilities of ULPGC’s Vet Faculty (Campus Universitario Montaña Cardones, 35413, Arucas) and Medicine Faculty (Campus de San Cristóbal, C/ Blas Cabrera Felipe S/N, 35016, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria).

9. A trial period of six months will be established during which the employment relationship may be terminated at the request of either party. Situations of temporary incapacity, maternity, and adoption or fostering, which affect the worker during the trial period, will interrupt the calculation of the trial period.


Eligibility criteria

The following items and scores will be considered to evaluate the application:

Professional experience (Max. 4 points):

1. Professional experience related to any of the tasks of this job offer, carried out in public or private research centres:

  • 0.1 points for each month worked, up to a maximum of 3 points for experience in medical or veterinary entomology.
  • 0.1 points for each month worked, up to a maximum of 1 point for experience in molecular techniques for diagnosis of parasitic disease.

Further training (max. 1 point):

1. Courses related to the tasks described in this job offer:

  • 0.25 points per course over 20 hours related to insect vector entomology, up to a maximum of 0.75 points.
  • 0.05 points per course over 20 hours related to molecular biology techniques for disease diagnosis, up to a maximum of 0.25 points.

Other (max. 5 points):

1. PhD degree in the following fields (max. 1.5 points):

  • Veterinary entomology (max. 1.5 points)
  • Laboratory diagnosis of parasitic diseases (max. 1 point).

2. Scientific publications related to the topic of this job offer, published in international indexed journals (JCR) (maximum 3 points):

  • Publications on veterinary entomology of insect vectors (max. 1.80 points):
    • 0.6 points for each Q1 or Q2 publication.
    • 0.3 points for each Q3 or Q4 publication.
  • Publications on laboratory diagnosis of parasitic disease (max. 1.20 points):
    • 0.2 points for each Q1 or Q2 publication.
    • 0.15 points for each Q3 or Q4 publication.

Each publication will be considered only in one category.

3. English level (max. 0.5 point):

  • B2 (0.25 points).
  • C1 or higher (0.5 points).

Selection process

Likewise, the Commission, if it deems it necessary, may summon those applicants who achieve the three highest scores to be interviewed. The selected applicants will be summoned, by e-mail, at least three days in advance. The evaluation of the interview will be carried out, up to a maximum of 10 points, based on the following criteria, being necessary a minimum score of 5 points in the interview to be awarded the position:

  • Initiative and ability to work in a team.
  • Capacity for presentation and presentation of results.
  • Motivation.
  • Adequacy of your profile and skills to the functions of the position.
  • Knowledge of the sector in which the activity will be developed.

In case it is necessary, a second interview may be carried out, in order to clarify, complement or deepen in certain aspects necessary to adequately assess this phase.
Once this phase of the selection process is completed, the Commission will publish, on the corporate website of the FCPCT of the ULPGC, a final list with the scores of the applicants interviewed, for which the score or evaluation obtained in the merit assessment phase and in the interview, ordered from highest to lowest score, will be accumulated. This list will be submitted to the Managing Director of the FCPCT, proposing the awarding of the position, according to the score obtained by the applicants.
The Commission may propose the creation of a reserve list in the event of resignation, failure to meet the requirements, or failure to pass the probationary period of the initially designated applicant; future substitutions due to illness, maternity/paternity, etc.; as well as for new positions in the same category. In this case, the reserve list shall be valid for a period of one year from the date of its publication or until a new call for applications is published. Likewise, the Commission may propose to declare the vacancy vacant.
