MSCA - Postdoctoral Fellowship: Regulatory Genomics research group

Updated: about 2 years ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 15 Jun 2022

The Regulatory Genomics research group, led by Dr. Tanya Vavouri of the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (Fundació Institut de Recerca Contra la Leucèmia Josep Carreras ) welcomes expressions of interest from excellent postdoctoral researchers to jointly apply to the European Commission Marie Sklodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme (MSCA-PF-2022).

The long-term goal of the group is to understand how gene expression and genome packaging is affected by genetic and epigenetic changes that happen during evolution, development and in disease, in particular cancer. Their research approach is to computationally analyse global datasets in order to understand general mechanisms. The group is currently interested in two fundamental questions that they are addressing using a combination of dry and wet-lab experiments. To address these questions, they team up with experts in complementary fields from other research institutes as well as hospitals. First, they want to understand how epigenetic drug treatments affect gene expression, and chromatin at different contexts in the human genome. Epigenetic drugs currently used in the clinic include those for the treatment of patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and Myelodysplastic Syndrome. Their work involves experiments on human cell lines as well as analyses of data from samples extracted from patients undergoing drug treatment. A better understanding of the effects of these drugs and how they work may lead in the future to more personalized treatments. Second, they want to understand how information about our exposures to different environments may be encoded in molecules - other than DNA – inside germcells that are transmitted from parents to offspring. This trans/inter-generational transmission of epigenetic information can influence an organism’s phenotype, or disease risk. The group is interested in understanding what molecules carry such information between generations and the mechanisms involved.

mobility allowance as well as research, training and networking costs, which translates in a very competitive salary conditions in relation to the average cost of living in Barcelona, which is a dynamic, vibrant and multi-cultural European capital city.

Applicants must have a strong publication record corresponding to their research experience (at least a first author publication in IF publication) and provide evidence of independence, a clear idea of what you will achieve during your fellowship and a reflexive understanding of your career development needs. Candidates will be expected to co-create their proposal with their host supervisor.

Enjoying a MSCA fellowship at IJC will allow you to gain research experience, develop research independence and maturity, improve your professional skills and make grow your international profile and network.

Who are we?

The Josep Carreras Institute was founded in 2010 with the mission of developing excellent research in basic, epidemiological, preventive, clinical and translational aspects of leukemia and other hematologic malignancies, and the vision that all leukaemias will one day be totally curable. In order to do this, employs world class researchers and cutting-edge technology, having always the patient at the center of the institute’s research strategies.

The Institute is member of the Research Centers of Excellence of Catalonia (CERCA, Catalan Government), also accredited by the Spanish Ministry of Health as Health Research Centre of Excellence (ISCIII) and by the Spanish Association Against Cancer (Asociación Española contra el Cáncer, AEEC). The institute also holds the HR Excellence in Research (HRS4R) recognition awarded by the European Commission.

The Josep Carreras Institute is a multi-campus and multi-environment research center with five sites that work in close collaboration with a reference hospital: University Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Catalan Institute of Oncology-Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital, Sant Pau University Hospital,University Hospital Dr. Josep Trueta and Hospital del Mar.

The Institute as host institution, through its Research Grants Office, will provide support to applicants throughout the proposal preparation process, and the Human Resources Department will assist the funded candidates on any issue related to their mobility.

The Josep Carreras Institute is an equal opportunity employer. We evaluate qualified applicants without regard to race, colour, religion, sex, national origin, disability, and other legally protected characteristics.
