Dr Juan Carlos Rodríguez-Manzaneque has been working in the tumor microenvironment and its remodeling by proteolysis, together with the extracellular and cellular components of the vascular niche. Such studies have special relevance for the understanding of mechanisms of drug resistance (such as antiangiogenic therapies) that certain tumors develop. The convergence of advanced platforms of genomic analysis, together with the functional study of extracellular components in the aberrant scenario of a tumor, appeared as a reliable scenario to investigate for the best knowledge of tumor progression.

Dr Rodríguez-Manzaneque has been devoted for many years to the study of extracellular matrix remodeling, mostly in the context of tumor plasticity and neo-vascularization. He developed his career in this field since his postdoctoral training at the laboratory of vascular biology world-leader Dr Iruela-Arispe (UCLA, USA). He has made unique contributions to the identification of substrates of ADAMTS proteases, its role in progression of a range of carcinoma types and its actions in tumor cell plasticity, such as the challenging phenomena identified as vasculogenic mimicry. Such studies have been reported in top journals such as PNAS, Cancer Research, Nature, PLoS Genetics, Cell Research, Matrix Biology, and others.

Description of the center

GENYO is a public research centre held by the Regional Ministry of Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment, the Regional Ministry of Equality, Health and Social Policies, the University of Granada and the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. This centre has been devised as a space for excellence research in genomic medicine, focussing on the comprehensive study and understanding of the genetic basis of human diseases in general, placing special emphasis on cancer and genetic disorders related to inheritance.

GENYO was created as a multidisciplinary research space to generate new systems to diagnose, prevent and treat diseases based on the joint and coordinated application of first-rate knowledge in the different areas of genetics. This centre is the benchmark centre of the Andalusian Program for Research in Clinical Genetics and Genomic Medicine, with the main objective of supporting and fostering translational research in Advanced Therapies.
