Offer Description

The Fundació de Recerca Clínic Barcelona-Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (FRCB-IDIBAPS) is a public research centre dedicated to biomedical translational research, FRCB-IDIBAPS is the result of the integration in 2023 of the Hospital Clínic Foundation for Biomedical Research (FCRB), created in 1989, and the consortium August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS), created in 1996. It is a nonprofit foundation with a board of governors representing the Catalan Government departments of Health and of Research and Universities, Hospital Clínic, Barcelona, and Universitat de Barcelona. IDIBAPS belongs to the CERCA Research Centre Network of the Catalan Government and holds the accreditation from the Spanish National Institute of Health Carlos III. The close interaction of close to 100 clinical and experimental research groups at IDIBAPS drives forward original translational research oriented to solve relevant biological and clinical questions for human health.

IDIBAPS is seeking to recruit the Head of the Research Computing Platform. The successful candidate will have the exciting opportunity to build and develop a new platform to support the IDIBAPS research community and its systems strategy. She/he will be able to recruit a team, envisioned initially of 3 to 4 people, with a scientific-technician activity contract.

The mission of the new platform on “Research Computing” is to provide a central hub for the research community, transversal departments, and internal users to access expertise in the following areas:

  • Software and computing: setting up and managing computing and high-quality storage and backup solutions, ensuring their maintenance and access to meet diverse computational needs.
  • Technical management: responsibility of technological needs and their implementation, development as well as technical documentation; management of technological projects, suppliers, maintenance, among others.
  • Bioinformatics and data science: support for analysis of omics data, including high-throughput sequencing and single cell omics, and other biomedical data, development of pipelines and databases, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine-learning applications.
  • Research data management: support for the research data life cycle, in compliance with FAIR principles and IDIBAPS Open Science policy, including data management plans, storage, reproducibility, and data sharing through recommended repositories.

In alignment with IDIBAPS mission and strategy and with the Information Systems department of Barcelona Clínic Hospital (DSI), the platform aims also to become a central hub for networking and exchange of best practice and standards in computing, facilitating interdisciplinary collaborations within the Campus Clínic. Moreover, the platform may trigger working groups on specific topics of interest. The platform will be a key player in promoting responsible, ethical, and open science, facilitating compliance with new IDIBAPS Open Science policy as well as data requirements from funding agencies.

Another important objective of the platform will be to provide consultation and regular training to the research community to promote computational and data-skills. Training could be in the format of workshops, access to online resources and developed guidelines.

The Research Computing platform will be under the umbrella of IDIBAPS Core Facilities, reporting to the Head of Core Facilities, and tightly collaborating with the strategic leadership. The new platform will be functionally linked and work in collaboration with the Information Technology teams at IDIBAPS and Barcelona Clínic Hospital.

Tasks and responsibilities

Initially, the Head of Research Computing will be expected to work with the Strategy Director and the IDIBAPS Core Facilities and Bioinformatics Committee to understand computing and data analysis needs, current practices, challenges, and opportunities. From there, the Head will need to charter a technology roadmap and sustainability model, and to define new recruitments to build the team to offer state-of-the-art research computing services to the institute´s community.

Key tasks include:

  • Identify and ensure provision of high-quality services to meet IDIBAPS computational needs.
  • Maintain, develop, and articulate the evolution of the computing technology strategy.
  • Continuously analyse the best technological solutions on the market and execute an implementation strategy of the selected ones.
  • Define the requirements for future recruits of the team.
  • Manage computing and storage resources at IDIBAPS.
  • Deliver configuration changes, firmware and software upgrades, installations, and replacements, when required.
  • Manage technology projects.
  • Coordinate, deliver and maintain internal documentation; provide training on fair use of the computer cluster, data management, among others.
  • Establish policies and procedures for software and hardware development and maintenance.
  • Facilitate internal networking and exchange of good practice and standards in computing, bioinformatics, and research data management.
  • Ensure compliance with Open Science principles and relevant internal policies.
  • Scout for new opportunities (e.g., projects, alliances, grants, etc.) to further develop the platform, in line with the institute´s scientific and strategic goals.
  • Work with suppliers and vendors.
  • Manage the team and its associated budget.
  • Ensuring and overseeing data security and privacy.
  • Interrelate closely and collaboratively with the systems department of Barcelona Clínic Hospital.

  • Collaborative and teamwork approach.
  • Patience and resilience under pressure.
  • Goal-oriented focus.
  • Continuous desire to learn and keep up with technology advances.
  • To be close to researchers and internal users.
  • Have an in-depth knowledge of current and emerging technologies.

Valuable qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience in the other areas foreseen by the platform, including bioinformatics (NGS, single-cell, omics data, etc.), data science, data visualization, machine-learning, research data management and Cloud environments (AWS, Azure and Google).
