Project Description: 

The ATLANTES Global Observatory of Palliative Care is a multidisciplinary research center made up of scientists from diverse academic backgrounds: palliative medicine, geography, public health, humanities, statistics, etc. It is part of the Institute of Culture and Society (ICS) of the University of Navarra (Spain). It collaborates with an extensive network of partners in which the international palliative care associations, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pontifical Academy for Life stand out.

The main objective of the ATLANTES Global Observatory of Palliative Care is to promote the global development of palliative care by spreading its positive values.

The Observatory's lines of research are three: a) Basic or fundamental research on the values ​​of care in advanced disease and the end of life (Intangible Values); b) Descriptive research for the documentation of the global development of the palliative care in the world (Global Development); and c) Applied research on the message that palliative care transmits to society and health professionals (The message).

ATLANTES has an extensive trajectory (track record) of scientific publications (34 articles in JCR-Q1 journals and 17 in JCR-Q2 articles in the last three years). The center has obtained competitive research funding from both public and private funding entities, including the European Union. The team is formed of researchers from several countries such as Colombia, Portugal, Mexico and Spain, and an extensive network of collaborators from Canada, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, UK, among others. Our research team has worked in close relation with the Palliative Medicine Department of the Clínica Universidad de Navarra, our University Hospital, in Pamplona, a Designated Centres of Integrated Oncology and Palliative Care accredited by the European Society for Medical Oncology, since 2010. ATLANTES together with the Palliative Department is a Collaborating Center of the European Palliative Care Research Network.

Sub-Project information:

The ATLANTES Global Observatory of Palliative Care, with the research line Global Development, seeks to understand how to monitor the development and integration of palliative care in the national health systems across the world. This includes the monitoring and evaluation of palliative care services at the recent primary health care framework, the development of relevant and feasible global indicators to evaluate progress of palliative care, and the construction of health information systems to collect data on service delivery, health workforce, use of essential medicines, education and training, governance of health systems and the involvement of stakeholders.

The candidate must be able to contribute in one or more of the current projects:

  • Assessing the Development of Palliative Care Programs: The aim of this project is to provide a tool that countries and stakeholders can use to monitor the progress of palliative care according to their respective health priorities and resources. This work is based on a set of indicators that allow evaluating the national development of Palliative care, which allows identifying the factors that promote the activity of palliative care in national health systems, especially in Lower-middle-income countries.
  • Regional analysis of the development of palliative care: The ATLANTES Global Palliative Care Observatory develops evaluation processes of the palliative care status in different regions of the world (Europe, Latin America, EMRO, etc.), generating reports that are useful for decision-making and advocacy.
  • Data analysis and transfer of results: The ATLANTES Global Palliative Care Observatory seeks new ways for illustrating the progress of palliative care in the world. This means transferring the results of its research to inform decision-makers, civil society, and the health professionals through innovative online and visual tools
