Project description

Open position for a research assistant / scientific developer in Computer Vision and 3D Visualization. 

This post is framed within the eSSCANFace, a research project aimed at developing the technology necessary to make early screening of craniofacial dysmorphology more accurate, more accessible, and more comprehensive, and to allow its deployment as early as possible in life. 

Congenital anomalies are a major cause of infant mortality and childhood morbidity, affecting 2-3% of newborns. It is estimated that 30% to 40% of genetic disorders produce alterations in the normal morphology of the face and the head, known as craniofacial dysmorphology These malformations can impact swallowing, breathing, hearing, vision, speech, and -more importantly- cognitive development. After birth, initial diagnosis is often based on visual inspection from pediatricians but, unfortunately, dysmorphology is hard to identify in this way, and massive genetic screening is expensive and impractical. For these reasons, there is a growing interest in using facial imaging as a low-cost tool for genetic pre-screening, i.e., to highlight suspicious cases for further study. 

The present post is expected to contribute to the project by means of developing user-interface and visual analytics tools that are clinician- and researcher-friendly (Work-Package 5), to facilitate the clinical translation and use of the tools and algorithms generated within the project.

The expected start date is March 25th, 2024, the job is in Barcelona.

Tasks to be performed:

  • To develop a clinician/researcher-friendly user-interface and visual analytics tools to facilitate the clinical translation and use of the tools and algorithms generated within the project.
  • To ensure all required data safety and privacy are fulfilled in the developed tools.
  • Prepare reports and documentation of the developed technology & tools.
  • Close interaction with clinical collaborators and national and international level.

Dedication and working hours: Full time (35h/week)

Planned remuneration approx: From 31.982,86 € to 39.376,54 € gross per year based on experience and skills.

Eligibility criteria

Selection criteria: The selection of the candidates will be made through evaluation of the curriculum and, where appropriate, with the carrying out a test and/or interview. Valuation will be as follows:

  • Academic Training adequate to the project tasks (0-20 points):
  • Professional experience and Adequacy to the proposed profile (0-60 points): 
    • Experience in development of computer graphics or 3D processing/visualization applications.
    • Prior experience in medical imaging/ machine learning.
  • Other merits (0-20 points): Good English skills, both written and spoken.

The minimum score to pass the selection process is 80 points. The candidate with the highest score in the selection process will be offered the job and in case of resignation, the position will be awarded to the next person in order of score obtained, as long as the established minimum score has been passed.
