We welcome applications with an interest in the speaker’s understanding of natural languages; especially, why languages have expletive items, and whether their existence is correlated with expressive meanings, focusing on any of the following questions and related topics:

A. Expletiveness in syntax and semantics

(i) What is expletiveness in language?

(ii) How is expletiveness morphosyntactically analyzed and compositionally derived?

(iii) What are the semantic operations needed to compose the meaning of an expletive category at LF?

(iv) Does expletiveness show a parallel with other phenomena of polar sensitivity?

B. Expletiveness and grammatical categories

(i) Does the distinction between syntactic and semantic expletives correlate with specific grammatical categories?

(ii) Do natural languages show a tendency towards the same expletive categories, both synchronically and diachronically?

(iii) Do expletive categories correspond to high peripheral positions in the syntactic structure? (e.g., high negation vs. low negation)

(iv) Can the Jespersen's Cycle be extended to cover not only expletive negation but also other forms of expletive categories?

C. Expletiveness and expressivity

(i) Which meanings can be driven beyond grammar in association with an expletive category?

(ii) Do expletive categories contribute to Common Ground management or to Common Ground content?

(iii) How does the presence of expletive items influence production and comprehension?

(iv) What are the general processes involved in the acquisition of expletive categories?
