Offer Description
We seek a Strategic Development Ambassador for the Mosquito Alert citizen science system implemented jointly by Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), the Spanish National Research Council’s Blanes Center for Advanced Studies (CEAB-CSIC), and the Ecological and Forestry Applications Research Centre (CREAF). This is a research support staff (PSR) position connected to the Mosquito Alert research line funded by multiple grants.
The Ambassador will be responsible for (a) overseeing the implementation of Mosquito Alert globally, including developing and maintaining relationships with implementing partners in multiple countries around the world and ensuring the high quality of the system as a citizen science tool for public health, and (b) developing and implementing a strategic plan for the long term financial and operational sustainability of Mosquito Alert.
Project and institution that finance the contract
This position is funded by several projects, including IDAlert, E4Warning, and PLANET4Health. Additional funding sources connected to Mosquito Alert may be added in the future.
IDAlert is aimed at addressing the impacts of climate change on the emergence and spread of infectious diseases. As our planet heats up due to climate change, outbreaks of zoonotic diseases – diseases that spread from animals to humans – are increasing and expanding to new parts of the world, in particular Europe. Warmer temperatures, more variable rainfall, and the loss of biodiversity influence the survival and spread of zoonotic pathogens, and the reproduction and geographic location of their vectors, such as mosquitoes or ticks. Past and recent health crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, have shown there is a need for stronger and more inclusive preparedness and responsiveness to epidemic-prone pathogens at the EU and global level. IDAlert aims to tackle this challenge by developing a range of decision-support tools and systems to enable decision-makers to act on time with improved responses.
E4Warning takes a holistic approach to improve our understanding of the interplay between humans, mosquitoes, reservoir species and the environment for a better disease intelligence capable of anticipating and identifying mosquito-borne diseases epidemic risk and outbreaks. To address the complexity of Mosquito-borne diseases (MBDs), the E4Warning consortium is made up of an interdisciplinary and innovative team from 12 organisations from Spain, Germany, Greece, Belgium, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, with experience in entomology, movement ecology, epidemiology, Earth Observation science, sensor engineering, sociodemography and spatial statistic modelling.
PLANET4Health provides new knowledge and tools on environment degradation and its impact on human animal and ecosystems health. The project results will support policy making process and citizens awareness on sustainable planetary health, climate and environmental policies and adaptation and mitigation strategies to natural hazards. PLANET4health will develop collaborations from a large variety of organizations from the: environmental and climate science, public health, epidemiology, veterinary medicine, social, political and economic science, engineering, law and ethics, and communication, to produce solid knowledge and tools to facilitate learning and practice on the interaction between the natural system and human health.
Official number reference: IDAlert - Grant Agreement No. 101057554; E4Warning – Grant Agreement No. 101086640; PLANET4Health – Grant Agreement No. 101136652.
