Department of Mathematics and Systems Analysis https://math.aalto.fi/en/  is a highly regarded academic community of more than 100 employees, with around 20 professors, 10 lecturers, 20 postdocs, and 45 doctoral candidates. The main research areas of the department are:

  • Algebra and discrete mathematics,
  • Analysis and nonlinear partial differential equations,
  • Numerical analysis and inverse problems,
  • Stochastics and statistics,
  • Systems analysis and operations research.

Professor Position in Mathematics (Tenure Track)

The Department of Mathematics and Systems Analysis is looking for a talented individual for a tenure track or tenured position in Mathematics. The position is targeted primarily at candidates for the Assistant and Associate Professor levels. However, applicants with an indisputably outstanding record for the Full Professor level may also be considered.

Applications from all research areas are welcome.

The position is open to talented individuals who hold a doctorate in mathematics or a closely related field and have excellent potential for a productive scientific career. We seek candidates whose research and teaching complement and strengthen the department. The ability to build bridges between different fields of mathematics and science is valued. As the department is committed to fostering an inclusive environment with diverse faculty members, applications from groups that have been underrepresented in mathematics are particularly sought after.

Job requirements

A person at any level of the tenure track system  is expected to perform world‐class research, to teach, advise and otherwise advance education, to be an active member of the international scientific community, and to exhibit academic leadership. Career advances on the tenure track are based on scheduled performance assessments that take into account the candidate’s merits in all these areas. The ability and enthusiasm to teach relevant courses and supervise students are essential. Applicants are required to have a fluent command of English, which is the teaching language for the relevant master’s and doctoral level courses as well as a working language of Aalto University.

The contract is full-time and either fixed-term or permanent depending on its positioning on the tenure track. The position has a competitive salary and seed funding for setting up a research team. The contract includes occupational health benefits. The position will be filled at the latest by the end of the year 2023, but the precise starting date is negotiable.

The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of their research achievements in relation to their career stage, their teaching merits and activity in the scientific community. Short-listed applicants will be invited for a full-day visit to present and discuss their research with the faculty of the department. Evaluation of the applicants follows principles of the tenure track evaluation criteria  of Aalto University.

The application material must be in English and must include the following documents as a single file in PDF format (‘lastname_firstname_application.pdf’):

1. Cover letter including a summary of merits and most important achievements.

2. Curriculum Vitae; The CV should preferably include the sections in the template  recommended by the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity.

3. A list of publications in which the 5 most significant publications are highlighted.

4. Research portfolio. This is a concise (4–10 pages) self-reflection on the merits, long-term vision, and research plan of the candidate. The portfolio is narrative text, supported by fact-based evidence.

5. Teaching portfolio. The teaching portfolio describes the candidate’s experience and vision of teaching. The portfolio summarises the candidate’s teaching competence, experience and education, and includes a self-assessment of teaching development during the candidate’s career. The portfolio is a concise (4–10 pages) narrative text, supported by fact-based evidence.
