Job description

The Department of Emergency Medical Care, within the Faculty of Sciences on the Doornfontein Campus, currently offers a range of emergency care qualifications. Starting in 2022 the Department will be offering a new qualification in the form of an Advanced Certificate in Medical Rescue.  With the growing number of students registering for rescue-related modules, coupled with the construction of a new, purpose-built, on-campus rescue centre, the Department requires an academic to facilitate undergraduate teaching focusing on Aquatic Rescue, Physical Preparedness, Trench Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, Structural Collapse and Hazardous Materials Rescue and Emergency Medical Care.  

Job Description:  

The successful incumbent would be responsible for facilitation of teaching, learning and assessment activities for undergraduate medical rescue and emergency medical care students including supervision of postgraduate research.  

Responsibilities 

  • Facilitating teaching, learning and assessment activities for undergraduate emergency medical care and rescue students with a focus on Aquatic Rescue, Physical Preparedness, Trench Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, Structural Collapse and Hazardous Materials Rescue and Acute Emergency Medical Care.
  • Participate in, and facilitate, clinical Learning and / or related WIL, simulated learning events and placements including the mentoring of students on the clinical learning platform.
  • Development and refinement of online course materials.
  • Organize and participate in physical fitness and swimming training including the conducting of related assessments.

Minimum requirements

  • A PhD or Masters’ degree in Emergency Medical Care or an appropriate professional qualification at NQF 9 in the field of emergency medical care or medical rescue.
  • Registration with the HPCSA as an Emergency Care Practitioner.
  • A minimum of 3 years lecturing experience at university level.
  • Code EC driver’s license.
  • A marine short range radio operator certificate.
  • A commercial day skippers license for category C offshore work.
  • Experience with rotor winged, swift/flood water rescue training and / or operations

Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:  

  • Good interpersonal skills as well as the ability to interact with colleagues.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Enthusiastic, tenacious and have a passion for emergency care and technical rescue.

Recommendations:  

  • Experience in local authority, military or other related disaster response involving rescue operations and training.
  • Fire-Fighter I and Fire-Fighter II NFPA qualifications.
  • Experience in remote site medical operations.
  • Experience with the use of self-contained underwater breathing apparatus.
  • Knowledge of faculty and academic policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Expertise in relevant approaches and models, analytical techniques, and methods.
  • Experience with online learning platforms.
