Offer Description

Postdocs will
• Work within the framework of the IMPULZ project “G-quadruplex DNA for Genetic
Engineering in Bacteria (G4-bac)” funded by the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
• Perform cutting edge science using molecular biology, biochemistry and biophysical methods
• Design and execute experiments and perform data analysis and write scientific publications
• Communicate scientific progress through internal meetings within the working group of
Synthetic Microbiology and Department of Microbial Genetics and contribute to seminars at
the Institute of Molecular Biology.
• Actively participate in writing research grants for postdocs.
Project description
Synthetic biology is an interdisciplinary and rapidly evolving field that explores the biological
functions of naturally occurring phenomena and applies this knowledge to genetic
engineering. The primary objective of the field is to engineer microorganisms with specific
properties, facilitating the synthesis of various products, promoting sustainability in a biobased
economy, and offering solutions to environmental challenges. One of the current
challenges in synthetic biology is how to increase the complexity of regulatory regions.
Alternative DNA structures that act as genetic regulators can meet this need, and one type of
such structures is the four-stranded DNA complexes called G-quadruplexes.
The newly established working group led by Dr. Jan Jamroskovic focuses on studying Gquadruplex
DNA structures in bacteria and exploiting them in genetic engineering. The group
investigates G-quadruplex DNA structures to comprehend their biology, maintenance, and
their effects on fundamental cellular processes such as replication and gene transcription.
The primary aim is to design synthetic bacterial promoters for use in both basic and applied
research.
Requirements
Experience in molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry and/or synthetic biology is
required. Familiarity with DNA G-quadruplex field as well as technical expertise in protein
purifications and biochemical assays using DNA/RNA polymerases, helicases, or other DNAinteracting
proteins and skills in bioinformatics would be an advantage. A good command of
written and spoken English is a must.
