    The study is organized on the basis of the credit transfer system and completely in accordance with the Bologna process. The study programme is designed for teachers and researchers, as well as specialists from the public and business sectors. The focus of the study is on acquiring research skills and knowledge needed to carry out independent research in economics, business and management sciences. Graduates from the doctoral study programme receive the third level university education and upon completion the degree PhD (Philosophie Doctor). The programme can be studied in Slovak (Finance) or English (Economics).

    A doctoral programme of study is aimed at gathering state-of-the-art scientific knowledge. The students are required to conduct scientific research and carry out independent creative activities in the field of science and thus make their own contribution to the global scientific findings. Upon successful completion of the doctoral programme of study the students are awarded the doctoral degree. The study at a doctoral level (hereinafter referred to as “doctoral study“) is conducted in accordance with an individual plan of study and under guidance of student’s thesis supervisor. The duration of full−time doctoral studies is 3 years (Economics, Finance); the duration of part-time doctoral studies is 4 years (Finance). A doctoral study programme and the progress of each student is monitored and evaluated by a joint scientific board for the relevant field of study set up in accordance with the internal rules of the faculty. University of Economics in Bratislava or External Educational institution provides a full-time doctoral student a scholarship based on the Higher Education Act of the Ministry of Education SR, No 131/2002. 

    A doctoral study consists of an educational part and a research part. The educational part of a doctoral study consists predominantly of lectures, seminars and individual study of specialised scientific literature depending on the field of the dissertation thesis research. The research part of a doctoral study consists of research activities within the framework of the dissertation thesis topic which may be carried out either by the student alone or in a research team. A full-time doctoral study also includes teaching activities. Apart from tutorials, the average amount of student’s teaching activities in one academic year shall not exceed two units of teaching per week.

    A doctoral study is concluded by the dissertation thesis defence. During the dissertation thesis defence the student shall prove his or her capability to carry out independent research and creative activities in the respective field of research or development. University of Economics in Bratislava awards the students who successfully complete the doctoral study with the academic title of “doctor“ (“philosophiae doctor“ abbreviated „PhD.“), which shall be written after the person’s name.

    The  Faculty of Economics and Finance of the University of Economics in Bratislava offers doctoral (PhD.) studies in 2 accredited study programmes:

  • Economics (in English) - full time 

    The study program Economics prepares graduates capable of conducting original research at the frontier of knowledge from an international perspective, addressing the fundamental economic issues of our time. Its graduates have a thorough knowledge of economics and its applications in various fields, the ability to think systematically and can creatively use quantitative methods to solve fundamental economic problems. They acquire skills and competencies from leading economists and at the same time develop their own research program. They will find their application in academic positions in the international environment, in executive positions in the public sector, as the main executives in the private sector, but also in renowned research and international organizations. They can gain positions at universities, as researchers in central banks and other domestic and international institutions, or as consultants or other professionals in the private sector. The university's extensive international ties allow students to attend courses taught by experts from leading universities around the world (such as University of Vienna and WU Wien, University of Coimbra, CERGE-EI, Chapman University) in addition to internationally recognized domestic university teachers. Students devote themselves independently to the original research program, which is closely supervised and led by faculty members. In this regard, they cooperate mainly with their supervisor. Regular research seminars with invited foreign experts, a doctoral research seminar, and other academic activities contribute to their own development towards a personality who can take responsibility for conducting research in a given scientific or professional field, present research results to the international professional community, and contribute to the development of the society in the context of scientific and technical progress.

    The study program is taught in English. It prepares graduates who are competitive in the international labor market. It reflects the fact that economic research at the European level is conducted in English. It contributes to the internationalization and openness of education at the UEBA Faculty of National Economy. It takes place through international cooperation with partner institutions, active involvement of foreign professors and lecturers in teaching and research activities and seminars of doctoral students.

  • Finance (in Slovak) - full time or part time 

    Graduates of the doctoral program “Finance”, i.e. the highest level of university studies, are prepared to use latest modern research methods and to explore the full spectrum of current theoretical and practical issues in the broader area of finance. Graduate is profiled by advanced expertise in theories of finance, baking and insurance. They master complicated quantitative methods, model simulations and methodologies which enable them to creatively assess basic economic and financial context and conduct research in this field. After graduation, they will be able to independently formulate research questions or hypotheses in the field of finance, banking and insurance and conduct research by using appropriate methods. In addition, graduate has extensive knowledge of macroeconomic, global, European and political context. Doctoral scholars acquire critical thinking, propose solution to complex problems independently, also interdisciplinary issues and work as member of scientific team. They will also be able to analyse and evaluate complex practical and conceptual issues, propose appropriate solutions within institutions and processes in public and corporate sector, banking, public finance, taxes and on various levels of management, business administration, including in international context. Under the cotutelle scheme with Macquarie University Sydney, students have the opportunity to complete their profile, knowledge and international experience by completing a double PhD diploma with this renowned university in Australia. They also have the opportunity to complete internships at the OECD, use the Laboratory for Financial Analysis (established within the Excellence project) and the Laboratory of Experimental Economics. In terms of employability perspectives, graduates have perspectives as top analysts and specialists in public sector, financial and non-financial organisations, but also as academic researchers. 

    Their scientific and methodological background provide them employability perspectives in various international and national institutions, especially in those of financial, monetary and insurance specialisation.

    Benefits

    Pursuant to section 54 (18) of the Act, a public higher education institution, a state higher education institution or an external educational institution provides a scholarship to a student in a full-time doctoral study programme (around 1000€ per month). A student of a full-time doctoral study programme is entitled to a scholarship for the duration of the standard length of study of the study programme to which he/she has been admitted, unless he/she has already obtained a 3rd degree. a) This entitlement is until he/she has been passed the dissertation examination, at least at the degree of the 6th salary grade and the 1st salary step of the special salary scale for university teachers and research and development staff according to a special regulation; and b) after passing the dissertation examination, at least in the amount of the 7th salary grade and the 1st salary step of the special scale of salary scales for university teachers and research and development employees according to a special regulation. 

    Study in the study programme Economics is carried out only in full-time form, the doctoral student receives a monthly scholarship of about 1000 EUR and does not pay tuition fees for the standard length of study.


    Eligibility criteria

    The essential prerequisite for admission to the 3rd degree study programme at the NHF UE in Bratislava is a 2nd degree of university studies and successful completion of the entrance examination at the NHF UE in Bratislava. The NHF EUBA also sets another condition for admission to the 3rd degree of study: - knowledge of the English language. 

    An applicant for doctoral studies applies for one of the dissertation topics (section 54 (5) of the Act). 


    Selection process

    The examination committee evaluates the applicant´s whole entrance examination and its  result, awards an appropriate grade of the classification scale and records the result in the protocol of the admission procedure. When several applicants for doctoral study in the same study programme take part in the entrance examination, the examination committee proposes the order of their success as a recommendation for the Dean of the NHF EUBA. The examination committee shall record the evaluation of the applicants´ order of success in the protocol of the admission procedure. The representative of the Faculty of Applied Languages of the EUBA evaluates the result of the entrance examination of English language skills with the appropriate grade of the classification scale and records the result in the protocol of the admission procedure.  The admissions committee of the NHF EUBA is composed of the Vice-Dean for Science and Doctoral Studies of the NHF EUBA, the chairpersons of the examination committees and the chairpersons of the programme boards for the respective study programmes of the 3rd degree of study at the NHF EUBA. The chair of the admissions committee is the Vice-Dean for Science and Doctoral Studies. The Dean of the NHF EUBA has the right to attend and speak at the meeting of the admissions committee. The admissions committee of the NHF EUBA comprehensively evaluates the results achieved by the applicants at the entrance examination and submits to the dean of the NHF EUBA a proposal for the admission/non-admission of the applicant for doctoral studies. This proposal is based on the needs of individual departments of the NHF EUBA as well as the fulfilment of the admission criteria by applicants for doctoral studies, which are the result of the professional entrance examination, the entrance examination in English, the submitted materials for the admission procedure and the number of allocated places for doctoral students for full-time studies at the NHF EUBA. The admissions committee shall draw up written minutes of its meeting, in which it shall justify the selection of applicants and the criteria it has taken into account in its decision.
