Being part of the European Capital of Culture project is an exceptional opportunity. Trenčín is only the second city in Slovakia to receive this title. The main part of the program is waiting for us in 2026, but preparations are already in full swing today, we have even launched some projects. There is more and more work, so we are gradually putting together a team. Will you be a new piece that fits into the Trenčín 2026 puzzle?

We are now looking for a data scientist to join the team, who will work on the monitoring and evaluation of the Trenčín2026 project. The researcher will process advanced analyses of quantitative primary and secondary data as well as collaborate with the Trenčín 2026 team, other cultural policy actors, and research institutions.

What awaits you in the Trenčín 2026 team

•  The selected fellow will complement a multidisciplinary research group for the monitoring and evaluation of the European capital of culture that is working in various areas of research expertise including cultural policy, cultural management, economy, engineering, project management, diversity, equity, inclusion, tourism, and placemaking.

•  The research fellow will be registered as a guest researcher at Liverpool John Moores University and will cooperate with other international and Slovak universities, cultural organizations, and stakeholders.

Skills/Qualifications

• A completed or started Ph.D. in a computational or quantitative area, such as computational social science, data science, data journalism, computational linguistics, information science, network science, etc. while demonstrating understanding or meaningful interest in socio-cultural phenomena.

• Alternatively, Ph.D. studies in a cultural research area, such as art history, digital humanities, cultural management, cultural sociology, cultural policy studies, cultural geography, or tourism management, with a strong track record in computation or quantification.

• Programming skills (Python, R, D3, Processing, or similar) and proficiency with libraries for data manipulation and analysis, machine learning skills.

• Candidates should ideally be familiar with, or not afraid to learn, state-of-the-art machine learning usage, such as the use of machine learning models (such as ChatGPT, Bing, and StableDiffusion) including their use for writing codes.

• Skills in producing scientific figures as found in top-level multidisciplinary journals.

• Preference will be for candidates who possess multidisciplinary competence and the necessary open-mindedness to bridge cultural and urban policy, cultural management, tourism, wellbeing, environmental sustainability, and economy.

• Advantage is demonstrated ability to produce (potentially) high-impact research, ideally making sense of large-scale socio-cultural data, including corpora of visual and audiovisual materials, and/or capturing the structure and dynamics of multidimensional spaces of (cultural) meaning.
