We are currently recruiting a Laboratory Technician who will join the Animal Research Facility for the Zebrafish facility at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKC Medicine), a joint medical school between Imperial College London and Nanyang Technological University (NTU). The zebrafish facility is in the Experimental Medicine Building, located on the Nanyang Technological University campus, and the housing zebrafish are for research to the university scientific community.
We require a laboratory technician to assist in the care and feeding of zebrafish in the LKCMedicine Animal Research Facility. This will provide a smooth functional holding facility for optimal research purposes.
Responsibilities:
Preparation of food for the zebrafish: Prepare dry and live diets for adults and larval stages of the zebrafish, including weighing and mixing of ingredients, blending to appropriate granularity and assist in the cultivation, hatching and harvesting of artemia.
Feeding of fish and larval stages: Follow a fixed feeding regime- dispensing appropriate food to each tank depending on the feeding regime, age of the fish, and number of fish in the tank. Assist in loading the feeding robot.
Tank washing: periodic cleaning of tanks by rota, through use of automatic washer or manual scrubbing. Understand the correct procedure of loading, selecting the appropriate wash cycle, initiating the wash process and finally unloading the washed items.
Observation of fish health: Surveillance of health in each tank and facility wide. Removal of dead fish and isolation of moribund or sick fish. Informing relevant research staff of the unwell fish/tank and storage of dead fish.
General upkeep of the fish facility: carry out weekly clean-up, procuring/ topping up of supplies, and ensure that all problems including equipment failure are flagged to the ARF Deputy Director or Facility Engineer to provide smooth operations within the fish facility. Carry out water quality monitoring to ensure it meets optimal conditions for zebrafish growth.
Requirements:
Diploma or higher education with at least 5 years’ experience working as an aquarist either in a commercial aquarium or zebrafish facility.
This is a 3 years contract appointment.
