Virtual Singapore Competency Centre – Researcher / (Senior)Trainer

Description

Singapore University of Technology and Design is searching for excellent candidates in urban and city-scale transport related design, or infrastructure planning, to join a new programme lead by SUTD: Virtual Singapore Competency Programme. The programme is championed by the National Research Foundation (NRF), the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) and the Government Technology Agency of Singapore (GovTech).

The Virtual Singapore Competency Programme

Virtual Singapore is a dynamic three-dimensional (3D) city model and collaborative data platform intended for use by researchers, the public sector and commercial users to develop sophisticated tools and applications for modelling and test-bedding concepts and services, for planning and decision-making in the area of city, transportation and infrastructure planning. The aim of the program is the dissemination of the use of the Virtual Singapore platform by offering trainings, build example use cases, and test and extend the system for educational purposes.

The candidate will contribute to the following objectives of the programme:

  • To undertake the role to train users from government agencies, research institutions and AU’s with different levels of expertise to demonstrate the capabilities of Virtual Singapore and help conceptualize and understand the potential of a 3D city collaborative modelling and simulation platform
  • To identify needs as well as data and capability requirements of the various government agencies to facilitate planning and decision making and of other users to facilitate their research,
  • To investigate features and capabilities of and trends in 3D city modelling and simulation platforms, and to map needs and requirements of users on features capabilities and trends.

SUTD The project is a collaboration between the SUTD Academy, SUTD’s Architecture and Sustainable Design Pillar and SUTD-MIT International Design Centre, who leads the project.

The SUTD Academy is the Professional and Continuing Education arm of SUTD. It was established to enable its faculty and industry practitioners to update and upgrade the knowledge and skills of professionals, managers, executives and its Alumni through professional education and training.

The Architecture and Sustainable Design Pillar at SUTD is one of only two universities in Singapore accredited and endorsed with the Board of Architects. It seeks to address the major challenges of sustainably, liveability, and urbanization though intensive research and development of new technologies and approaches. With deep research interests and collaborations with government agencies such as URA, BCA, and HDB.

The mission of the SUTD-MIT International Design Centre (IDC) is to drive design research and innovation, in collaboration with a wide spectrum of researchers, global enterprise, government and social stakeholders.

Position

The candidate will work closely with the project’s researcher, business developer and project officer. The candidate will work closely with the trainees and users of Virtual Singapore to help them understand and develop a 3D city modelling platform.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Become proficient and conversant with the capabilities of Virtual Singapore platform developed by Dassault Systèmes.
  • Work with the team to develop intermediate and advanced training courses for current and prospective users (for researchers and government agencies) of Virtual Singapore
  • Deliver introductory, and technical training courses for Virtual Singapore platform.
  • Investigate features and capabilities of and trends in 3D city modelling and simulation platforms, and map these onto user needs and requirements.
  • Optionally support the project’s researcher to develop in JavaScript (and possibly Python) working examples of ‘widgets’ (utilities linked to Virtual Singapore urban analytics) both as training examples and research use.

Academic and Professional Qualifications:

  • At least a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Architecture or Geography/Urban planning.
  • Interest/experience in city modelling and/or city simulation.
  • Knowledge and experience in geospatial (GIS) and/or digital twin software, in data manipulation, and in scripting/coding is desirable.
  • Some experience in research is desirable.
  • Excellent presentation skills. Educational experience is desirable.
