Research Fellow (Processing/Microstructural & Characterization of advanced alloys)

Updated: about 1 year ago
Location: Singapore,
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

The School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering invites interested candidates to apply for a Research Fellow position. The Research Fellow will help advance the fundamental understanding of process-microstructure-property relationships of 3D-printed superalloys and steels, with a focus on the fracture and fatigue properties. The position is for two years. The position will support an A*STAR funded project on structural metals and alloys.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct experimental research to evaluate the process-structure-property correlation of 3D printed alloys, including steels and superalloys, with emphasis on fatigue and fracture.

  • Design post-processing heat treatment to optimize mechanical property for structural applications

  • In depth interpretation of experimental results, and analysis using microstructure-mechanical behavior synergies for high impact journal publications and internal reports.

  • Develop new mechanical characterization methods for ambient and extreme conditions, like elevated temperature, and corrosive environments.

  • Assist the PI in the guidance of PhD and FYP students.

  • Carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions, and research groups.

Job Requirements:

  • PhD degree in Metallurgical/Materials/Mechanical Engineering or related discipline from a reputable university

  • First Class honors during Bachelor’s/ Master’s Degree in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from a reputable university will be considered desirable

  • Strong track record in scientific publications on peer-reviewed journals, especially on high-impact journals in metallurgy and materials science fields (such as Acta Materialia).

  • Demonstrable experience of mechanical testing including fracture toughness measurement, fatigue properties evaluations, and indentation tests.

  • Demonstrable experience of microstructural characterization including some of TEM, SEM, EBSD, EDS, XRD.

  • Demonstratable understanding and knowledge of metal 3D printing (especially laser-powder bed fusion and binder jetting).

  • Ability to interact with an international team of researchers.

  • Excellent oral and communication skills, including the proven ability to write in English at a suitable standard for the preparation of written reports, publications and presentations of the work at generalist and specialist levels, including discussions with collaborators and scientists/engineers in different fields.

We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
