Research Fellow (Polymer Chemist)

The School of Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) invites applications for the position of Research Fellow. The Research Fellow should have a strong record of polymer chemistry with related experience in composites, resin transfer moulding, adhesives, and/or formulation development. Other desirable qualifications include industrial background in induction, nanomaterials, coatings, polyesters, acrylates, and/or elastomeric materials. We look for applicants who are highly motivated and can demonstrate initiative and lead a technical team.


Key Responsibilities: 

  • Develop, improve and assess metal oxide nanomaterial additives in thermoplastic resins.

  • Identify and select monomers for use in thermoplastic composites.

  • Define and measure colloidal stability of nanomaterials in selected resins.

  • Assess chemical and rheological properties of in situ polymerization resins.

  • Use Computer Aided Design (CAD) programs to create demonstrator and product concepts

  • Manage and deliver project KPIs and objectives per plan

  • Ensure milestone delivery per plan/schedule, manage/control project risks & mitigating actions

  • Prepare/consolidate periodic reports (finance, technical) as required

  • Manage project documentation, knowledge/data capture and reporting

  • Manage logistical issues and laboratory inventory

  • Ensure compliance with health and safety in all aspects of the research work

  • Work in a research group comprising postdoctoral fellows, PhD/undergraduate students, internships, and academic/industrial collaborators who are actively engaged in novel methods of composite manufacturing.

Job Requirements: 

  • Master’s/PhD (preferred) in Science or Engineering field from reputable university.

  • Polymer chemistry experience related to in situ polymerization or resin transfer moulding is highly desired.

  • Formulation development related to colloidal stability, dynamic light scattering, rheology, and/or composites manufacturing is an advantage.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and ability to work in a diverse, international, and inter-disciplinary research environment.

  • Minimum of 2 years of public/private sector or industrial experience.

  • Hands-on knowledge of polymer chemistry and resin formulation development.

  • Experience in schedule and resource planning of complex multi-party engineering projects.

  • Ability to work well with multiple competing priorities, manage projects and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with strong initiatives.

  • Evidence of research outputs, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong record of scientific/industrial impact within a composites/materials/engineering sector.
