The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Fellow on a four-year contract at the Office of Education Research .

Project Title: Reading Futures Study: A Longitudinal Cross-Case Comparison of Adolescents’ Print and Digital Reading Practices

Project Introduction: Large-scale, systematic changes in the Singapore educational context such as the launch of the Student Learning Space (SLS) in 2018, Personal Learning Device (PLD) initiative since 2021, implementation of Full-Subject-Based Banding in all schools by 2024, and rapid development and increasing use of machine learning technologies have led to seismic changes in everyday practices of  teaching and learning. This multi-phased ethnographic longitudinal mixed methods study aims to examine adolescents’ changing print and digital in-school and leisure reading practices as they move across their secondary school years, within transformative educational contexts. The study has the potential to inform curriculum practices, learning environments and instructional practices in Singapore and internationally. Individuals interested in joining a dynamic and collaborative team to contribute to our education ecosystem are invited to apply for the positions available.

Requirements:

  • PhD in Education or language-related
  • Three to five years research experience
  • Qualitative and quantitative research experience essential, including proficiency in use of basic research tools such as Qualtrics, SPSS, Nvivo, and/or Tableau
  • Excellent English communication skills (written and oral), with experience in report writing
  • Bilingual proficiency in conducting interviews
  • Project management experience for higher grades
  • Strong people skills, with ability to work well in a team
  • Familiarity with the Singapore education system an advantage

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with project administration and communications with school
  • Independently conduct literature searches and reviews
  • Work with a team to design, collect and analyse qualitative and quantitative data 
  • Contribute to the organization of workshops and writing of research reports, journal articles and related publications
  • Project management for higher grades
  • Lead in research writing of reports and other research-related publications for higher grades
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Principal Investigator
