Two Research Fellow/ Postdoc Positions in Hydrologic/Environmental Systems and Computational Optimization

Description and Location:

Applications are requested for Research Fellow (Postdoc) positions focusing on application of optimization to environmental systems, hydrology, and computational global optimization with Prof. Christine Shoemaker, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and Civil and Environmental Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS).  

Job Requirements:

  • A  PhD degree in area related to Environmental and Water Resources Systems Engineering and/or Optimization is expected. .This includes PhD in Civil (and Environmental) Engr.(CEE) , Industrial Engineering  (ISEM), Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science.. PhD’s from  other Engineering  areas will be considered if the applicant also has substantial  experience  in environmental problems and in computational global optimization.  (Candidates about to complete their PhDs may also apply.)

  • Extensive experience in developing complex computer codes, preferably in Python or C++.

  • Ability to construct and write papers   for leading research journals and conferences.

It is an advantage, but not a requirement for a candidate to have expertise in any of the following areas: modelling hydrodynamics and/or water quality, Distributed/parallel computing, machine learning, surrogate optimization. 

Research Focus and Goals

The successful candidates will work with Prof. Shoemaker’s group to apply parallel optimization algorithms for environmental simulation models.  The optimization problems can be expected to have multiple local minima/maxima. Computational efficiency can be greatly enhanced with Surrogate algorithms. Optimization has been coupled with machine learning to solve complex problems. The candidate will have the opportunity to develop research skills, improve domain knowledge and expertise, be funded to attend international conferences, and can work on the new Singapore Supercomputer (NSCC). Prior knowledge of our software pySOT (in Github,) is not necessary since it can be learned in the job.

Professor Shoemaker’s current research group includes 8 people with a mixture of expertise including postdocs and PhD students with degrees in CEE, ISEM, Mathematical Statistics, and Computer Science.  Her environmental group has had access to large amounts of data related to the aquatic environment.

The initial term of appointment for Research Fellows shall be for up to 18 months, with funds available for extension subject to performance criteria.  The remuneration and benefits are internationally competitive, and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
