Job Description

The successful candidate will work with A/Prof Suresh Valiyaveettil on assessing the environmental impact of microplastics and controlled polymer degradation.

The job involves understanding the impact of microplastic particles in the marine environment. A fresh PhD in environmental impact of microplastic or polymer science or environmental science or chemistry with a few high impact publications is desired.

More specifically, research experience in one or more areas such as preparation and characterization of microplastic particles, environmental monitoring and testing of different samples for microplastic contamination are needed for the position. The candidates will work with a multidisciplinary team to develop new materials, processes and tools for detection, quantitative analysis and removal of microplastics from water.

More specifically, the main responsibilities of the position include
(i) Collection of microplastic samples from various locations in the region
(ii) Identification of the microplastic samples using spectroscopic and microscopic techniques
(iii) Synthesize and characterize polymer nanoparticles and investigate their environmental impact
(iv) Investigate toxicity of polymer particles using various models
(v) Develop a viable method for the degradation of common polymers
(vi) Coordinate research activities between different groups
(vii) Help the PI to prepare documents
(viii) Organize workshops

Successful candidates will have the opportunity to conduct independent research, collaborate actively with multidisciplinary team and to develop new technologies. We are seeking a highly motivated goal-oriented person to join our team.
