Asia Research Institute
Asia Research Institute (ARI), National University of Singapore (NUS), invites application for ONE Research Fellow (or postdoctoral fellow) to join the project team of the collaborative project, “Archiving the Underclasses: Knowledge, Law, and Everyday Agency in Modern Southeast Asia,” directed by Associate Professor Maitrii Victoriano Aung-Thwin (PI).
Funded by an Academic Research Fund (Tier 2) grant from Singapore’s Ministry of Education, “Archiving the Underclasses” uncovers the role of marginalized figures in the making of governmental archives and other data collections in Southeast Asia from the late eighteenth century to today. Rather than focusing on conventional subjects of knowledge production such as colonial explorers, government bureaucrats, and academics, this project instead examines the “underclass” figures that procure information for the archives, from suspected criminals and war captives to migrant laborers, language interpreters, and local guides.
The project team—consisting of ten Singapore academics and the two new hires—will produce (1) a collection of publications on how such figures—through their involvement in administrative, legal, or extra-legal information-collection processes—shaped the “knowledge” that fills the archives, and (2) an online Archive of the Underclasses, a web resource providing access to primary source documents and interview transcripts about these figures in translation.
Only shortlisted candidates will be notified. Interested candidates, please submit your application by 15 January 2022. Shortlisted applicants may be called for interview, either in person or by zoom, as appropriate.
The successful applicant will be offered a fixed-term contract of 35 months from the date of hire, likely to be in March 2022. They will receive an attractive monthly remuneration depending on experience and qualifications. The position will be based in Singapore, although some research travel may be permitted. Singapore citizens and permanent residents are eligible for central provident fund benefits.
