The Energy Research Institute @ NTU (ERIAN) invites applications for the position of Research Engineer II. 

The Research Engineer will be part of a dynamic research team working on the Renewable Energy Integration Demonstrator - Singapore (REIDS) testbed on Semakau Landfill or the Experimental Power Grid Centre (EPGC) on Jurong Island. REIDS is a living lab for research collaborations between academia and industries to explore next-gen distribution grid solutions. EPGC is a megawatt-scale (MW) grid facility that is one of the largest integrated energy system test facilities in this region. Both research platforms are instrumental to test and validate RD&D innovations for the energy sector.



Key Responsibilities: 

  • Contribute in upcoming projects in the areas such as power systems, power engineering, smart grid solutions, electrification, wireless/5G communications and cloud/IoT/AI/edge computing grid applications.  

  • Manage & familiarize the operations of electrical core infrastructure that consists of Low Voltage (400V) & Medium Voltage (6.6kV) MV switchgear, Gensets, Solar inverters, Energy storage systems & transformers with the approval & supervision of appointed LEW.

  • Work closely with the technical lead, LEW, contractors and industrial partners to implement the test cases on site, system stability analysis, protection studies, earthing, load flow analysis, short circuit calculations, fault analysis and circuit breaker coordination, interfacing multiple microgrids for power & energy management, latency analysis, interoperability & cybersecurity studies.

  • Site visits for the testing & commissioning (FAT/SAT), troubleshooting of the electrical systems, maintenance & upgrades, performing root cause analysis, carrying out corrective action and performing relevant verification activities to ensure system operational safety and meet design specifications. 

  • Plan & perform system integration, design reviews, commissioning, field operations, as per the industry standards and government regulatory requirements.

  • Prepare, update & maintain the standard operating procedures, single line diagrams, project design files and troubleshooting reports.

  • Any other ad-hoc duty or responsibility e.g., technical report, site briefing, procurement, progress updates and etc. assigned by the technical lead.

  • Familiarity with electrical and power systems, ICT-SCADA systems, ICT network implementation, sensors/sensor networks, and PLC systems is preferred.

 
Job Requirements: 

  • Bachelors or Masters in engineering (e.g. Electrical, Power, Communication / Computer / Automation & Control / Information Technology or related).

  • Experience in Low voltage and Medium Voltage products & switchgear (400V / 6.6KV) operations.

  • Good understanding and interpretation of distribution network studies, electrical codes and standards including SS638, Singapore safety Standards, IEC, IEEE etc.

  • Able to develop & modify the SLDs with AutoCAD skills for design drawing updates.

  • Good knowledge of distribution automation systems, SCADA, RTUs, Gateways, IEDs, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) & Intelligent RTUs, communication protocols such as Modbus, DNP 3.0 and IEC 61850.

  • Experience within the utility or energy and power system industry is a strong advantage.

  • Must be comfortable working on-site (typically 2 days / week).

  • Proficient in MS Office applications.

  • Should be a very hands-on person, willing to take on non-routine tasks.

  • Possess good communication (written and verbal) skills. Able to manage multiple stakeholders and work under tight timelines.

  • Positive attitude, ability to work independently as well as in a team.
