Offer Description

Job Description

The Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore (SERIS), NUS, has a job opening for a researcher for the BIPV group.

With an emphasis on green building practices and sustainable urban development, there has been a growing interest in Singapore for integrating photovoltaic modules into facades and other building elements.

Backed by government initiatives for the large-scale adoption of solar and a targeted >2 GWp of deployed PV capacity by 2030, the R&D focus is therefore also shifting towards building-attached PV (BAPV) and building-integrated PV (BIPV), here collectively called “BIPV”, as a solution to increase the deployment options in space-constrained Singapore. When moving into the vertical parts of a building, however, design and aesthetics become a critical factor for the seamless integration into the urban landscape.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in advancing BIPV research, contributing to the evolution of relevant module, and system technologies and shaping future sustainable building practices in Singapore and the region. This position offers the unique opportunity to be at the cutting edge of research in BIPV with a clear path towards test-bedding, deployment and later commercialisation.

As a research engineer or associate, the candidate will play a vital role in advancing diverse research topics and projects within the field of BIPV. Primary responsibilities include developing BIPV technologies such as shade-resistant and pixelized concepts or exploring novel and cost-effective methods for producing colorful and aesthetical solar modules. The candidate shall also contribute to the design and implementation of other novel deployment options for the integration of PV into the urban fabric, such as PV noise barriers. The role requires strong technical but also creative contributions to the various projects.

Additionally, the candidate will be collaborating and coordinating with stakeholders such as industry partners, government bodies and academia to ensure successful execution of projects and initiatives. Finally, the candidate shall be assigned ownership of tools within the laboratory, overseeing their operation and maintenance in aid of the different projects within the BIPV group.

This role offers a dynamic and hands-on opportunity to contribute significantly to the advancement of BIPV technologies while advancing meaningful collaborations within and beyond the institute.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s or master’s in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Architecture, Physics or related fields
  • Experience in dealing with PV modules or systems with a track record in either experimental design or data analysis, and modeling
  • Previous experience with operation and maintenance of laboratory scale tools and equipment
  • A background in coding and relevant software such as Matlab, LabVIEW, CAD or PVSyst is preferred
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team.
