Job Description

 

The Centre for Maritime Law (CML) at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore, was launched on 3 September 2015 and focuses broadly on international trade, transport and shipping law–related issues. It undertakes research and hosts events of scholarly value to academics, professionals, and government institutions. Its objective is to enhance the development of commercial maritime law in Singapore, the region, and further afield. CML’s continuing achievements include a highly–regarded Working Paper Series (WPS), available at https://law.nus.edu.sg/cml/publications/ , and the CML CMI Database, Judicial Decisions on International Conventions, available at https://cmlcmidatabase.org/.

 

The Director of CML is Professor Stephen Girvin, MPA Professor of Maritime Law, and the Deputy Director is Associate Professor Paul Myburgh.

 

CML is inviting applications from suitable candidate(s), who are at the beginning of their professional careers, to conduct research and participate in CML's work. Depending on qualifications, background and expertise, the successful applicant(s) will be appointed as a Research Associate in CML.

 

The successful applicant will join CML’s existing full–time and Adjunct research staff (see https://law.nus.edu.sg/cml/personnel/ ).

 

 

Benefits

 

The position(s) will carry the following benefits:

 

1.    Employment on a full–time contract at NUS Law for one year and, subject to satisfactory performance, may be renewable for a second year.

 

2.    A remuneration package, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

 

3.    Allocation of designated workspace within CML.

 

 

Duties

 

The duties associated with the position(s) are as follows:

 

1.    The successful applicant will be expected to be in residence throughout the term of his or her appointment, subject to the normal NUS terms as to annual leave.

 

2.    Depending on experience, the successful applicant will be expected to develop his or her own research agenda, including undertaking research projects on maritime law, leading to publication in English–language refereed journals, during his or her term of appointment. The proposed research agenda MUST also include writing working papers for publication in the CML Working Paper Series (https://law.nus.edu.sg/cml/publications/ ).

 

3.    The successful applicant will also be required to present his or her research and to participate in and contribute to CML seminars.

 

4.    The successful applicant is expected to assist in CML’s research projects and initiatives, including the CML CMI Database, Judicial Decisions on International Conventions (https://cmlcmidatabase.org/ ).

 

5.    The successful applicant may be asked to act as research assistant to the Director or Deputy Director of CML, as assigned by the Director of CML.


Qualifications

 

Requirements

 

The selection committee will consider the following criteria in making an appointment for the position of Research Associate in CML:

 

1.    The successful applicant will be of exceptional calibre.

 

2.    For appointment as a Research Associate, the successful applicant must hold a postgraduate (LLM) degree and relevant experience in maritime law.

 

3.    Applications are invited from those with interests in any branch of commercial maritime or shipping law or admiralty law or marine insurance law, including the international sale of goods carried by sea, maritime conflict of laws, maritime dispute resolution (including maritime arbitration, especially in the Asian context), and offshore oil and gas law. A demonstrated interest in contemporary research on maritime law, such as the impact of COVID–19 on the maritime sector, ship finance in the 21st century, and decarbonisation and the shipping industry, may be an advantage.

 

4.    Applications are not sought from those with primary interests in the international law of the sea, ocean law and policy, or international environmental law.
