Research Assistant (Tectonics - InVEST Component F)

Updated: about 1 year ago
Location: Singapore,
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) at Nanyang Technological University seeks a Research Assistant to work on rapid and accurate quantification of disasters using remote sensing and space geodesy. They will also advance InSAR processing algorithms to optimise change detection capability in Southeast Asia, where SAR analysis is complicated by tropospheric and ionospheric effects, dense vegetation, and soil moisture.

The candidate will work under the supervision of Associate Prof Sang-Ho Yun and will collaborate with the researchers from the ‘Integrating Volcano and Earthquake Science and Technology (InVEST) in Southeast Asia’ project, a 5-year project that aims to provide a holistic understanding of regional tectonics, volcanoes, the linkages between the two, and their cascading hazards and impacts in Singapore and Southeast Asia. We will be hiring a large number of research staff and students to work on this project, so it promises to be a very exciting time to join our team!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Rapid generation of disaster maps (deformation and damage proxy) for earthquakes and volcanic activities

  • Upgrade a disaster response support system for more effective and efficient response support

  • Engage in collaborative discussions with the large number of team members and collaborators for InVEST.

  • Engage machine learning techniques to improve the InSAR coherence time series analysis

Job Requirements:

  • B.S. in geophysics, geomatics, geodesy, geomatics, electrical engineering, computer science, natural hazards, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated skills in remote sensing, image processing, inverse problem, machine learning.

  • Expertise in the analysis of a wide range of geospatial and geodetic data sets

  • Strong expertise in programming with Python or MATLAB.

  • Evidence of excellent English language and communication skills

  • Evidence of independence in research direction and team spirit

EOS is a Research Centre of Excellence at Nanyang Technological University Singapore that conducts fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, towards safer and more sustainable societies.

EOS maintains a regional network of geophysical observation stations in collaboration with neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia, that are supported by the EOS Centre for Geohazard Observations, as well as a Remote Sensing Lab (EOS-RS). Computational resources are available through a dedicated cluster and collaboration with the High-Performance Computing Centre of NTU. In addition, EOS hosts state-of-the-art analytical facilities for petrological and geochemical analysis, and a Community Engagement office that co-creates learning opportunities for a range of audiences to promote a safer and more sustainable future.

EOS seeks a diverse and inclusive workforce and is committed to equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from all and recruit on the basis of merit, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, marital status and family responsibilities, or disability.

Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, list of publications, and statement of research interests.

We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
