Job Posting for Research Assistant
Remote sensing of dynamic human-water systems
 
The Resilient Water Systems lab (PI Gopal Penny) in the Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore is seeking a Research Assistant (RA) with experience in data science and/or GIS to better understand interactions among climate, environment, and water in rapidly changing agricultural systems in South and Southeast. This exciting position will allow the RA to apply technical approaches to help address urgent management questions regarding tipping points and regime shifts in human-water systems.
 
Primary responsibilities:
 
•    Generate high-resolution (10-30 m) remote sensing datasets of crop land cover.
•    Fuse secondary datasets with remote sensing imagery to improve classification.
•    Apply time series and geospatial analyses to understand agricultural behavior patterns. 
•    Merge existing remote sensing products with geophysical and social (e.g., survey) datasets.
•    Prepare figures and analyses to contribute to peer-reviewed research publications.

Qualifications

BSc or MSc related to GIS, earth science, engineering, mathematics, or machine learning
•    Excellent programming ability in at least one of the following: R, python, or Google Earth Engine
•    Proficiency in statistics and/or other quantitative skills
•    Good oral and written communication skills

 

Skills:
 
•    Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
•    Highly self-motivated, excellent communicator
•    Ability to work independently and in teams
•    Experience applying machine learning and deep learning tools (desirable)
•    Experience analyzing large-scale geospatial data (desirable)
