ASE is an interdisciplinary school that will be a world leader in environmental research focused on Asian environmental challenges. The ASE integrates earth and environmental life science, ecology, engineering and technology, human ecology, humanities, and the social sciences to address key issues of the environment and sustainability.
We are seeking to hire a Research Assistant to spearhead data collection and manage a new NTU-NUS collaborative project entitled: “Ecological drivers of nutrient runoff from natural and managed vegetation types”. This project investigates how urban vegetation patches sequester or leech nutrients into drainage systems in Singapore, and in so doing develop targeted solutions to nutrient pollution.
The Research Assistant will lead in the collection of data for an NTU-NUS collaborative project investigating if urban vegetation patches sequester or leach nutrients into drainage systems in Singapore, supervised by Dr Lam Weng Ngai (NTU) and Dr Jerome Kok (NUS). The Research Assistant will monitor tree growth and canopy production in natural, Albizia-dominated forests and managed, rain tree-planted streetscapes over a one-year period. Training in basic field and laboratory skills will be provided.
Job Responsibilities
Conduct field work to forest and streetscape sites to collect data of tree growth, canopy production, and samples of leaves, wood and water
Conduct lab work to process and analyse nutrient contents in collected samples
Assist in procuring project logistics and other project administrative duties
Train students and ensure the safe conduct of student research projects
Job Requirements
Possesses a diploma or bachelor’s degree in biology, botany, ecology, environmental science or equivalent
Must be able to do regular (approximately twice weekly) fieldwork
Should be a meticulous and independent worker with a keen interest in botany/ecology/nature
Prior experience with field or lab work is helpful but not required
