The Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) invites applications for the position of Research Assistant. 

The Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) is a unique interdisciplinary Research Centre of Excellence (RCE), funded by National Research Foundation, Ministry of Education, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and National University of Singapore (NUS). Hosted by NTU in partnership with NUS, SCELSE is linking new insights from the life sciences with expertise from emerging technologies in engineering and natural sciences to understand, harness and control microbial biofilm communities and microbiomes.

 

We are seeking to appoint a motivated individual to join our team at SCELSE as a research assistant. The successful candidate will participate in research investigating the physiology of bacteria and their interactions with bacteria in infective endocarditis using in vitro & in vivo methodology. The main research tasks will involve planning and performing laboratory experiments involving bacteria and immune cells using methods such as qPCR, western blot, microscopy, flow cytometry, microfluidics, molecular cloning. The candidate will also assist in in vivo experiments. The successful candidate should have relevant prior laboratory experience and s/he should also be willing to learn how to work with rodents.


Key Responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for planning, performing, and documenting laboratory experiments involving bacteria and immune cells using methods such as qPCR, western blot, microscopy, flow cytometry, microfluidics, molecular cloning and more.
  • Responsible for procuring consumables related to the project
  • Work closely with the Principal Investigator of the project to analyze and interpret data, as well as troubleshoot experiments
  • Assist in in vivo experiments using an animal model of infective endocarditis
  • Participate in project meetings & prepare project updates


Job Requirements:

  • BA or BS in biology, biomedicine, microbiology or a related field
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn & independently plan & execute laboratory experiments to answer specific scientific questions
  • Experience in aseptic microbiology and/or mammalian cell culture technique is essential
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques including PCR, molecular cloning, and western blots is essential
  • Being willing to receive small animal handling training and work with rodents is essential
  • Experience in handling rodents and prior participation in animal studies is a plus
  • Experience in microfluidics and/or microscopy is a plus
  • Ability to meticulously plan, document and report experiments, and also be flexible and open to last-minute changes and variations
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills are essential
