About the Project

In printing circuit board (PCB) test, the intent is to ensure structural integrity of the board post-manufacturing (i.e. the board was manufactured per design and free of defects). The two top structural defects in manufacturing are opens and shorts. In-circuit testers are used to capture these defects.

In this project, we apply electromagnetic sensing (inductive and/or capacitive) and machine learning (ML) for contactless open/short test for high frequency PCBs. The project makes use of the transmit and receive of dynamic electromagnetic fields for the open/short detections. It includes investigations of the working mechanisms, designs and implementation of the transmitter and recievers, design and integration of a unit cell, synthetization of the control system, and development of ML algorithms for the detections. The design will be targeted on size miniaturization and detection accuracy.

Who We’re Looking For

A highly motivated scientist who works well independently within a dynamic group, is willing to assume a leading role in translational studies, and has strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with engineers, scientists, graduate students, and undergraduate students.

Desired qualifications:
• PhD (granted or soon-to-be-granted) in physics, electrical engineering (especially electromagnetics) or related field
• Software: CST microwave studio or equivalent electromagnetic software, Matlab/Python
• Designs of basic RF/microwave circuits
• Experience of RF/microwave circuit testing
• Experience on machine learning (bonus)
• Ability to learn new skills quickly
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills
