Legal Counsel/Senior Legal Counsel (Development Matters)

We are seeking qualified candidates to provide legal support to the development, fundraising and operations teams at the NUS Development Office. The Development Office is responsible for the cultivation and stewardship of philanthropic support to the University. This position will report to the Chief Legal Officer & General Counsel, with a dotted/matrix reporting to the Senior Director (Principal Gifts & Donor Relations); day-to-day direction on business unit matters is provided by the Senior Director (Principal Gifts & Donor Relations). This role will appeal to qualified lawyers of 5-10 years PQE, who can work steadily and are able to manage both legal and non-legal issues.
Duties and Responsibilities of the Role
• Reviewing, advising on and drafting agreements and other documents relating to gifts, donations and development matters for the Development Office and gift receiving units in NUS
• Liaising with internal clients and external parties, with the ability to give legal advice while being sensitive to industry-specific considerations, governmental regulations and policy issues. Key internal client interactions would include the Development Office as well as development functions within faculties and schools
• Monitoring and advising on legal, regulatory, compliance, governance and policy issues relating to development and fundraising matters
• Reviewing and supporting the implementation of systems, policies and procedures to streamline processes and manage risks for development matters
• Providing analytical and practical legal advice on a wide range of issues as required, including contentious and non-contentious, commercial/ corporate, procurement, employment and insurance matters, in relation to the day-to-day administration and operations of the Development Office
• Conducting or arranging in-house legal training and education for the Development Office and the NUS development community
• Managing NUS’ external lawyers on development matters
Qualifications
Requirements for the Role
• Recognised law degree and professional qualifications (preferably called to the Singapore Bar)
• Minimum 5 years PQE in a law firm or as an in-house legal counsel
• Strong corporate and commercial background; experience in development matters, particularly with an institution of higher learning, would be an advantage
• Strong communications, interpersonal skills and time management skills
• Ability to work independently as well as to be an effective team player
• Ability to deal with legal and non-legal issues holistically and with a sound level of maturity
