Job Description

Yale-NUS College is seeking a Laboratory Manager for the management of the day-to-day operations of its laboratories.

The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for providing support for both teaching and research activities. The laboratory manager is assigned to and be primarily responsible for ensuring the safety and sustainability of the labs as well as providing laboratory supervision and teaching of practical and hands-on techniques to undergraduate students with the aim of developing practical research skills in, including but not limited to, organic, inorganic, physical, and materials chemistry. The Laboratory Manager will be given the opportunity to carry out research under the supervision of the faculty.

This is a 3 years contract role.

 

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and manage the chemistry laboratories
  • Facilitate purchase of materials and supplies for the research labs
  • Maintain records and compliance with legal requirements and enforcement of safety rules
  • Provide general lab safety instructions and supervision to research students.
  • Be present when undergraduates are doing research in the laboratory – especially in the absence of faculty
  • Provide routine support for undergraduate research, including troubleshooting and preparation and maintenance of reagent and stocks
  • Be engaged in teaching of standard laboratory techniques and good scientific working practices to undergraduates
  • Train and lead undergraduates on safety protocols and experimental techniques in their research projects
  • Conduct experiments that involve, including but not limited to, HPLC-MS, UV-Vis, FT-IR, AFM, and NMR analysis, as well as reporting of results in a format appropriate for peer-reviewed journal articles
  • Perform technical and experimental protocols that support research activities in the college, significant contribution may be recognised in research output, e.g. by acknowledgement or co-authorship on research articles
  • Participate in designing and running laboratory classes supporting faculty and students
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Head of Laboratories and faculty

Requirements
  • Degree in Science (Chemistry)
  • Relevant postgraduate qualifications will be an advantage
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant managerial experience in a research laboratory setting
  • Familiarity with managing Chemistry laboratories is required. Candidates with experience or interest in organic, inorganic, physical, or materials chemistry are preferred
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in chemical synthesis or analytical chemistry is required
  • The successful candidate should also be proficient in using SciFinder, ChemOffice, MNova
  • Demonstration of research expertise with co-authored paper publications will be an advantage.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
  • Resourceful, independent, able to learn fast, and work well with others in a team
  • Meticulous in record and inventory keeping with excellent organizational skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
