The School of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology is seeking to hire a mechanical technical specialist to provide support to the Undergraduate teaching and research laboratory. The individual will also be assisting the school on lab waste disposal, general maintenance of lab and inventory management. This incumbent will also wear the hat of safety officer to ensure lab safety is being observed and ensuring the overall workplace health and safety of the school.


Responsibilities

Operation and maintenance of mechanical fabrication machine and other equipment

  • Taking proactive approach in understanding the students’ projects, and providing assistance and troubleshooting
  • Proposing and sourcing suitable mechanical machine for the mechanical workshop
  • Develop troubleshooting guide
  • Develop user guide
  • Provide hands-on training to end user

Manage and support other undergraduate lab e.g. Maker’s lab, fluid mechanics lab

  • Design and prepare the mechanical parts, adaptors, connectors and tools for the process
  • Preparing materials required for the lab before the class begins
  • Providing technical assistance during lab sessions
  • Conduct lab housekeeping

Proper and timely disposal of lab waste

  • Handle and coordinate the different waste (e.g. chemical, biological, food) from various teaching and research lab for disposal
  • Liaise with appointed waste collector vendor to dispose waste on timely manner
  • Submission of the waste disposal list to NEA on a timely manner
  • Maintain good housekeeping for the waste collection room

Maintenance of Lab, Safety and Exit Clearance

  • Conduct regular lab inspections to ensure safety protocol is followed by users
  • Assist in lab clearance ensuring controlled chemicals and reagents are returned as well as the general maintenance of the lab

Inventory Management

  • Provide analysis of the inventory for purchasing and budget projection
  • Ensure inventories are properly kept e.g. items that are temperature sensitive to be kept in the freezer
  • Ensure proper inventory management by updating inventory record once consumables, apparatus and solvents are received or distributed to users
  • Dispense goods to end user in a timely manner
  • Timely purchase of inventories
  • Maintain the housekeeping of the store

Requirements

  • Relevant education background in science or engineering areas. Adequate practical hands-on skills to handle lab scientific equipment operation and troubleshooting.
  • More than 2 years’ relevant experience in academic, research or industrial sector.
  • High level of safety and good situational awareness
  • Able to work independently and effectively under pressure and fast paced environment
