The Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) is a unique interdisciplinary Research Centre of Excellence (RCE), funded by National Research Foundation, Ministry of Education, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and National University of Singapore (NUS). Hosted by NTU in partnership with NUS, SCELSE is linking new insights from the life sciences with expertise from emerging technologies in engineering and natural sciences to understand, harness and control microbial biofilm communities and microbiomes.

We are seeking highly motivated candidate for a Laboratory Operations Executive position at SCELSE-NTU. The successful candidate will be part of the Laboratory Management team providing frontline customer service, laboratory support operations, infrastructure and facilities management, and workplace safety and health support to the research activities in SCELSE NTU. The role will involve good receipt and inventory management, general consumables supply management, in-house preventive maintenance of core equipment and facilities, management of chemical inventory management and the management of research waste disposal, in this multi-disciplinary Research Centre of Excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the receipt of laboratory-related goods delivered to SCELSE-NTU and all necessary documentation as part of the standard operating procedure for laboratory goods receipt and inventory management;
  • Administer laboratory assets and inventories;
  • Procure and manage chemicals and general consumables;
  • Provide administrative support to maintain centralized services to the research community and liaising with suppliers to ensure the timely delivery of services (e.g., lab coat cleaning, supply of dry ice and liquid nitrogen, etc….);
  • Liaise with service engineers to schedule for preventive maintenance for the laboratory equipment assigned (e.g., centrifuges) and arrange for ad-hoc repair;
  • Carry out routine in-house maintenance on the laboratory equipment assigned (e.g., centrifuges, fridges, freezers, etc...);
  • Oversee the collection of biohazardous and chemical solid waste by licensed Toxic Industrial Waste Collectors and update NEA Toxic Industrial Waste e-Tracking system;
  • Render front-desk support to laboratory operations as required; and
  • Any other duties and/or improvement projects as assigned by the HOD.


Requirements

  • Good diploma in Biotechnology, Life Sciences or related field;
  • Entry level candidates with some knowledge on the general maintenance and routines in a research laboratory environment gained through formal training or experience would be considered favorably, though candidates with at least one year of experience working in a laboratory would be desirable;
  • Knowledge on good laboratory practices and the management of hazardous substances is highly desirable (e.g., certification on WSQ Manage Hazardous Substances)
  • Good planning and organizing skills;
  • Must be able to multi-task and work independently, as well as in a group. Must demonstrate a willingness to collaborate and support colleagues and contribute to a positive team environment;
  • Must possess good interpersonal communication skills and a customer-centric attitude to keep the needs of researchers and stakeholders at the forefront and striving to deliver exceptional service;
  • Must be highly meticulous and have a knack of paying attention to details;
  • Motivated and must be highly adaptable to changes;
  • Possess a problem-solving mindset and be resourceful and proactive in identifying opportunities for process improvement, taking ownership of tasks and suggesting innovative solutions. Approach challenges as opportunities;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, such as MS Words, MS Excel, and MS Access.
