The Natural Sciences and Science Education Academic Group (NSSE AG) at the National Institute of Education in Singapore is committed to discovery and innovation in sciences and science education. Comprising faculty from both science content and pedagogical disciplines, we adopt an inter-disciplinary approach to teaching and research. Our science education researchers focus mainly on maximizing the potential of every child through research on students' learning approaches and problem-solving skills, and work with teachers to develop models of creative teaching and new approaches to learning. Faculty members receive research support through internal and external grants, as well as access to world-class research facilities.

The NSSE AG invites applications for Tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor position in plant molecular biology and genetics. The NSSE AG conducts teaching and research in both sciences and science-education and comprises academic staff with backgrounds in chemistry, physics, biology, and family/consumer sciences. It has facilities for research as well as carrying out pre-service and in-service work with teachers to support Singapore's schools and science educators.

Requirements

Successful candidates must have:

  • have a doctoral degree in life sciences, specializing in plant molecular approaches to study genetics, plant evolution and diversity
  • to be committed to excellence in teaching and in communicating science to teachers and students in primary and secondary schools.
  • Prior experience of teaching/research/postdoctoral experience in Asia, especially in multilingual and multicultural environments, is preferred but not essential.

Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be expected to :

  • teach a variety of introductory undergraduate courses in life sciences including courses in the field of plant biology using molecular genetics approaches to study plant evolution and diversity
  • teach some courses in Applied Plant Sciences at the Masters Level. In addition to undergraduate and graduate teaching, the position will also entail some course co-ordination, content upgrading of in-service teachers and provision of expert advice to schools on science projects.
  • supervise teacher trainees in practicum attachments and mentor graduate students.
  • conduct research and publish peer-reviewed papers within the broad area of plant molecular genetics. Interdisciplinary research will also be strongly welcomed.
  • serve on committees and offer consultancy and professional services to the Ministry of Education and other public education-related organizations.

The position is available from January 2024 onwards.
