Research Scientist Position in Machine Learning-augmented PV Monitoring

Location
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST)

Description
The KAUST Solar Center is seeking a seasoned Research Scientist for a full-time, fixed term position, initially for two years. The Research Scientist will support a research project that envisions to develop machine learning augmented monitoring of PV fields using drones for Vis/IR image acquisition. The position requires a strong background in photovoltaics with emphasis in PV module reliability, stability, and measurement techniques. We expect hands-on experience with PV system design, PV field equipment, PV field monitoring and PV simulation techniques. Programming experience, particularly Python, is a strong plus. The ability to work independently or as part of a team, as required, is a prerequisite.

Responsibilities

  • Develop PV plant inspection and data acquisition routines for drone-based PV monitoring
  • Inspect and classify IR images of PV modules for fault detection and characterization
  • Retrieve and analyze SCADA data from PV fields
  • Feed and maintain PV imaging data base
  • Test transferability of established machine learning software and respective hardware
  • Foster collaboration and exchange with participating teams
  • Compile and present data to team members and collaborators Perform spectroscopic studies of carrier dynamics in emerging semiconductors, specifically metal halide perovskites
  • Assist in organizing the logistics for PV field visits
  • Work hand in hand with other researchers, solving and troubleshooting operational challenges

Competencies

  • Fundamental understanding of photovoltaics at cell, module and system level
  • Expert knowledge regarding device performance and failure modes
  • Hands-on experience with PV characterization equipment, particularly at PV field level
  • Experience in creating and maintaining large data bases
  • Experience with SCADA systems and PV farm monitoring
  • Programming experience with Python or similar
  • Ability to work collaboratively and foster a cooperative work environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English

KAUST benefits for research scientists

KAUST offers a very competitive salary compared to international standards. Additional benefits include housing, medical and dental insurance, K-12 education for dependent children (subject to availability), relocation allowance, and repatriation allowance. The candidate will enjoy the multicultural experience of KAUST located at the shores of the Red Sea, in a state-of-the-art Research Center with outstanding facilities.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in physics, electrical engineering or other related fields with a specialization in photovoltaics with at least five years of subsequent experience in PV module reliability, PV systems or similar.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in all forms of communication, along with solid time management, teamwork and organizational skills.
