Recreation Specialist
The Recreation Specialist, working with the Manager, Community Engagement, develops, implements and delivers a Recreation strategy to offer a wide range of sports, recreational and wellbeing programs, activities and events to the KAUST community, and plans organizes, directs and coordinates the activities of the Recreation & Marine Services department. 
The Recreation Specialist has oversight of the operation and maintenance of all KAUST’s indoor and outdoor recreational facilities: Island Recreation Center, Harbor Sports Club, Racquet Club, Safaa Golf Club and Course, all playgrounds and outdoor sports pitches, marinas and beaches; designs, develops and delivers a wide range of youth and adult sports, recreation and wellbeing programs, activities and events to all segments of the community; and works with the Community Engagement team in delivering other community events.
The Recreation Specialist oversees the operations of the service providers responsible for Recreation Services (including community events), Marine Services, Golf Services and the Cinema and Theater; ensures regular audits and inspections are carried out to assure the service delivery of the service providers; and prepares and submits monthly payment certificates for the four services.
  • Works with the Manager, Community Engagement to develop, implement and deliver a Recreation strategy to offer a wide range of sports, recreational and wellbeing programs, activities and events to the KAUST community using the facilities and services available: recreation, marine, golf, cinema/theater, outdoor playgrounds and sports pitches.
  • Develops, plans and delivers sports, recreational and wellbeing programs aimed at different sectors of the community (i.e. children, students, adults), and promotes maximum participation in all programs, activities and events.
  • Works in collaboration with The KAUST School to create integrated and aligned programs and ensure maximised/optimised use of recreational facilities and coaches across both Recreation and TKS.
  • Evaluates program proposals from the service provider and works with the service provider to develop proposals and deliver programs.
  • Develops and implements a program of continuous improvements – to the facilities and the service.
  • Oversees the operations of the recreation, marine, golf and cinema contracts, totalling over $17m per year and is responsible for the day-to-day operation of KAUST assets – totalling approximately $73m.
  • Provides expertise in recreation and sports activities, advises management on recreational programs and activities, and helps to build capability in recreation within the team and department, with the service providers, and with the wider KAUST community.
  • Identifies issues with recreation and marine facilities and/or gaps in the service provision and works with the Service Provider to deliver solutions.
  • Develops, supports and provides guidance to the KAUST Self-Directed Groups (SDGs) and other community groups.
  • Develops and oversees work plans for assigned areas and co-ordinates proactive and reactive work activities, projects and programs.
  • Assures adherence to all safety requirements – both to ensure the recreation/marine facilities are fit for purpose, and to ensure the sports, recreational and wellbeing services being offered adhere to the highest health and safety standards.
  • Supports the service providers in marketing recreational programs through the use of flyers, news releases, website, etc., and approves all communications prior to release to the community.
  • Follow all Policies, procedures and guidelines, and ensures they are kept up-to-date and current.  Ensures all who partake in sports, recreational and wellbeing programs/classes are familiar with the relevant Policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Provide ongoing reports on the delivery of the Recreation and Marine service.
  • Adopts work patterns to align with a 7-days per week operation and to cover during National holidays, when necessary.
  • Assists the Manager, Community Engagement in the preparation of budgets for the assigned areas – forecasting funds required for staffing, equipment, materials/supplies, etc., and then administers the approved budget.

  • Strategic thinking and community vision.
  • Knowledge and demonstrable experience and success in leading community-based sports, recreational and wellbeing programs for youths and adults.
  • Knowledge of youth and adult recreational programs in order to identify appropriate programs to meet KAUST’s diverse needs; and to develop KAUST’s recreational offering.
  • Knowledge of laws, statutes and regulations governing Recreation Services functions.
  • Ability to think strategically and operationally, and plan and implement short and long–term plans to reach agreed goals.
  • Ability to build partnerships with the service providers, and across all levels of the University and with different community groups and stakeholders.
  • Ability to co-ordinate the operations of multiple facilities, to ensure the effective and efficient functioning of all facilities and services.
  • Ability to design and produce a wide range of campaign, outreach and marketing materials which represent KAUST Recreation in a positive manner, and knowledge in the use of social media channels to reach diverse community audiences.
  • Experience in leading staff to deliver recreation activities and programs.
  • Ability to develop and deliver successful recreational events and programs.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, and presentation skills.
  • High level of initiative, creativity and organizational skills, interpersonal skills, problem-solving abilities and project management experience.
  • Positive outlook, high personal standards of excellence and a passion for the vision, mission and values of KAUST.
  • Minimum Bachelors Degree in Recreation Management or relevant field.
  • Other relevant certifications/credentials to evidence professionalism in the field.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years experience and success in delivering successful recreational services, programs and events to a diverse community.
