The Cereal Genetics and Genomics group at KAUST is seeking a dynamic and self-motivated lab manager/lab technician. The principal duties and responsibilities of this hands-on lab-based position are to manage a state-of-the-art molecular biology lab. The work requires attention to detail, organization, responsibility, the capacity to troubleshoot, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Major responsibilities

  • Oversee all operational aspects of a state-of-the-art molecular biology lab (e.g. functionality of equipment, completeness of group consumables).

  • Establish and optimize molecular biology protocols (e.g. high-molecular-weight DNA extraction, RNA extraction, sequencing library construction, cloning, etc.).

  • Manage the group’s consumable stocks and ordering.

  • Perform specialized molecular biology experiments.

  • Ensuring that Health & Safety regulations are applied to.

  • Manage a small team of lab and greenhouse support staff.

  • Maintain an accurate experimental journal and inventory.

  • Perform other tasks and duties assigned within the realm of the employee’s knowledge, skills and abilities in the field of his/her position.

Required competencies

  • Extensive experience in hands-on molecular biology.

  • Knowledge of state-of-the art molecular biology protocols, consumables, and equipment.

  • Ability to troubleshoot and to interpret results.

  • Sound background knowledge of molecular biology.

  • Strong communication skills in both written and spoken English.

  • Ability to work with a diversity of people in a multi-cultural setting and a strong commitment to promoting diversity in the workplace.

  • Curiosity and drive to deliver impactful outcomes.

The Cereal Genetics and Genomics group is embedded in the Center for Desert Agriculture (https://cda.kaust.edu.sa/ ), which extends and supports a multi-disciplinary work environment in the area of plant sciences. The group consists of ̴ 12 members and shares lab space with other groups in the Center for Desert Agriculture.

The position is initially limited to 3 years but can be extended.

Qualifications

Needed qualifications

  • B.Sc. in molecular biology or closely related field with 2-5 years experience.

Preferred qualifications

  • M.Sc. in molecular biology with 2-5 years experience.

  • Experience with plant science research.
