Job Purpose:

The University Industrial Hygienist for the Research Safety Team supports university students, faculty, and staff in the management of Industrial Hygiene (IH) risks associated with lab operations. The IH will provide support in all labs with a strong emphasis in biological safety.  IH related support could involve nanomaterials, carcinogens, hearing conservation and other programs. Areas of responsibility in biological safety may include infectious agents and marine research.    The incumbent is responsible for managing the culture, risk acceptance and for improving Industrial Hygiene Programs at KAUST.

Major Accountabilities:

  • Strong knowledge and demonstrated experience working within the fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene to include exposure assessments, experiment reviews and hazard qualification.
  • Experience working with global biosafety standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Experience in the performance of risk assessments to anticipate, recognize, and control workplace hazards to include biological materials.
  • Develops and provides training to students, faculty, and staff for university safety programs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills / demonstrated mentoring experience in working closely with Principal Investigators, students and lab assistants to develop a lab safety culture that utilizes industry leading tools, techniques, and behaviors.
  • Works closely with students, faculty, and staff regarding corrective actions to resolve issues identified during incidents, assessments and inspections. 
  • Incident and event investigation to include lessons learned communications.
  • Coordinates occupational health workflows between staff, HSE, and medical practitioners.
  • Maintains inspections, data, and other KPI’s in the institutional database.
  • Industrial Hygiene in the following specific areas:
    • Nanomaterials, NMR, TEM and SEM laboratories
    • Chemical Safety/Chemical Hygiene to include carcinogen management, unique regulated materials and chemical process safety.
    • Cryogenic materials
    • Respirator protection program management
    • Participating in the design review process for lab design and ventilation systems.
  • Biosafety in the following specific areas:
    • Experience working in BSL-2 laboratories would be a plus.
    • Marine ecology and biodiversity and/or animals (primarily rodents and marine fauna)
    • Reviews research protocols involving the use of infectious agents, toxins, and recombinant DNA.
    • Viral vectors and other recombinant DNA use
    • Serving on institutional committees (IBC, IRB, IACUC)
    • Experience in overseeing biosafety equipment (e.g., autoclaves, BSCs) maintenance.
    • Strong customer service and mission enablement mindset.
    • Experience in database management.
    • Ability and experience in managing small & medium sized service contracts such as lab maintenance efforts.
    • Skill in analyzing and evaluating a wide variety of technical data, test results, reports, and plans.
    • Ability to use Microsoft Office including PowerPoint, Word and Excel.
    • Excellent verbal and written skills in English.
    • Able to work effectively in a culturally diverse work environment.
    • Support rapidly emergent university needs and emergencies, to include on-call and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an area related to biological sciences, microbiology, chemistry, or other science related field.
  • Membership in a professional organization (AIHA/ABSA/ACS) preferred.
  • Certification/Registration in IH or biosafety (CIH/CBSP/RBP) preferred.

Experience:

  • 7+ years of professional experience in Industrial Hygiene and biosafety, preferably gained in a university or laboratory R&D environment.
