Position Summary :

  • The individual serves the IAC mission to support research at KAUST and regionally by providing techniques and expertise for advanced and routine electron microscopy analysis in a user- driven environment.
  • The scientist serves this mission in his/her main area of expertise, which is Cryo electron microscopy.
  • This position is with a focus on Cryo EM in life science that includes plant biology, STEM cell research and marine biology.
  • Independently applies advanced knowledge in Cryo EM to solve related question in the field of cell biology.
  • Devises new approaches to problems encountered in plant and marine biology and in the field of STEM cell research.
  • Works on problems of diverse scope and offer a technical solution to relevant projects within the biology division.

Major Responsibilities :

  • Work in a team of scientists to build up technical expertise in 3D Cryo electron microscopy, including single particle analysis and cryo tomography imaging.
  • Train users and scientist on advance techniques of Cryo EM, Cryo tomography and sub tomogram averaging.
  • Perform and train users on reliable Cryo-EM sample preparation including cryo FIB.
  • Work on methodology development for continuous resolution improvement, including associated Standard Operating procedures (SOP).
  • Engage in KAUST research projects that require advanced Cryo electron microscopy techniques to facilitate high impact research.
  • Keep up to date on the latest development in in the area of Cryo electron microscopy.
  • Maintain and run EM sample preparation Lab.
  • Ensure good laboratory practice and safety in the assigned work area at all times
  • Ensure maximum uptime of assigned instruments (plan and oversee preventative and corrective maintenance, purchase consumables, etc.)
  • Perform routine laboratory duties and maintenance, including administrative, procurement, service on task forces and committees
  • Develops and evaluates plans and criteria for a variety of projects and activities to be carried out by others
  • Organizes and chairs sessions at technical meetings; presents invited papers; primary author or key contributor on major reports, products, papers, presentations, and peer reviewed journals.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Team Lead and Lab Director

Competencies :

  • Demonstrable expertise in Cryo electron microscopy, including EM Cryo sample preparation, Cryo EM imaging, 3D tomography and single particle analysis and sub tomogram averaging.
  • Solid foundation of structural biology.
  • Capability to plan and conduct work requiring independent judgment in the evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation/modification of standard techniques
  • Some organizational skills as well as ability to work effectively and efficiently in a multi-cultural environment, and collaborate with team members, lab users, and external service providers.
  • Ability to interpret and determine validity of data and contribute to written and oral presentations related to research findings.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and train staff

Qualifications/Experience :

  • Ph. D degree in Life Sciences or related field
  • Extended experience (minimum 3 years) in Cryo TEM/SEM.
  • Solid knowledge in structural biology and single particle Cryo EM workflow (experience in Cryo electron tomography is a plus).
  • Publication record showing the acquired experience in Cryo EM.
