Faculty position in Geological structures and multiphase reactive flow behaviors - geothermal energy, extraction, and energy storage -2024

Updated: about 6 hours ago

We are currently seeking outstanding candidates to join our faculty team within the Physical Science and Engineering Division (PSE) to lead pioneering research in following geoscience fields:

  • Geological subsurface structures
with experience in faults and fractures in sedimentary sequences, 3D mapping techniques, discrete fracture network (DFN) modeling, interfacing with dual porosity/permeability reservoir quantification.
  • Multiphase reactive flow behaviors in subsurface reservoirs
with experience in investigating multiphase reactive flow processes in subsurface reservoirs through numerical modeling and experimental studies, as well as developing innovative methodologies to characterize and predict fluid flow behavior, including fluid-rock interactions and chemical reactions.
  • Geothermal energy extraction and utilization,
with experience in geothermal reservoir characterization and/or reservoir engineering for low to medium enthalpy geothermal systems , as well as the ability to lead research initiatives in geothermal energy exploration, development, and utilization.
  • Subsurface energy storage,
with experience relevant to assessing the suitability of geological formations as energy storage reservoirs, the potential performance  of storage systems, the development of modeling frameworks for optimizing energy storage operations and environmental impacts.
  • Mineral exploration & exploitation
with experience in developing innovative methodologies for mineral prospecting and reserve estimation, integrating geological, geochemical, geophysical, and satellite data.

Ideal candidates should demonstrate a readiness to address these topics through a multi-disciplinary approach and to engage with different programs and research initiatives across the university’s divisions.

Furthermore, we expect research proposals to align closely with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and to contribute significantly to the objectives outlined in Saudi Vision 2030. This alignment should be explicitly demonstrated by emphasizing one or more of KAUST's Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) priorities, which include:

    1. Health & Wellness

    2. Sustainable Environment & Essential Needs

    3. Energy & Industrial Leadership

    4. Economies of the Future
