This Biosafety Specialist is responsible to oversee, establish, operate and manage the Biological Safety Programs at KAUST,  also to support staff, faculty, and student for use of biohazardous materials, bloodborne pathogens, and other lab safety programs.
 
  • Conduct risk assessments to anticipate, recognize, and control workplace hazards including biological materials.
  • Serve on the committees as dictated by operational need (i.e. Institutional Biosafety and Ethics Committee, Animal Care and Use Committee, etc.) and regularly report on status and issues of laboratory safety to the Manager, Health & Safety.
  • Review research protocols and lab safety plans involving use of biohazardous materials.
  • Support the animal facility and animal use program.
  • Update and revise the University Biosafety Manual as appropriate.
  • Develop, implement, and revise plans, procedures and guidance documents for use of biohazardous materials.
  • Develop and provide training to faculty, staff, and students for use of biohazardous materials, bloodborne pathogens, and other lab safety programs.
  • Perform inspections in laboratories to evaluate compliance with safety procedures.
  • Consult with diverse population of student, staff, and faculty to determine corrective action necessary to eliminate or reduce deficiencies identified during inspections.
  • Liaise with hazardous material specialist in the management of biohazardous waste program.
  • Act in a consulting role with campus administrative units, unit safety contacts, campus emergency responders, individual research groups, and researchers via one-on-one meetings, telephone, email, and service on safety committees.
  • Serve as resource as part of an emergency response team involving biohazardous materials.
  • Build effective partnerships with staff, faculty, and students throughout the University by freely sharing appropriate information and providing assistance when needed.
  • Ensure that biosafety equipment (i.e. autoclaves, BSC,etc.) are maintained and used appropriately.
  • Liaise with stakeholders regarding the import/ export of regulated biohazardous materials, select agents, etc.
  • Pre-reviewing research protocols involving the use of infectious agents, toxins, and recombinant DNA

  • Technical competency and laboratory experience with research involving recombinant DNA or biohazards (pathogens, biotoxins).
  • Knowledge of biosafety standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Experience working and providing a compliant biosafety program applicable to BSL-2 laboratories.
  • Skill in analyzing and evaluating a wide variety of technical data, test results, reports, and plans.
  • Ability to use Microsoft office including PowerPoint, Word and Excel.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills (English).
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Able to work effectively in a culturally diverse work environment.

  • Bachelor’s degree in an area related to biological sciences, microbiology, chemistry, or other science related field.
  • Membership in a professional organization (ABSA/ACS) preferred.
  • Certification/Registration in Biosafety (CBSP/RBP) preferred.   

 
Minimum of five or more years of professional experience in laboratory safety and biosafety including program development, in a research university or other research environment.
