Fixed Term for 36 months
Applications are sought for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work with Dr Alan Stewart on a BBSRC-funded project entitled "Zinc-dependent regulation of insulin multimerisation in pancreatic beta-cells and its implications for glycaemic control". The primary duties will be to investigate how zinc, pH, serum albumin and free fatty acids regulate insulin multimerisation, storage, release and signalling, and how disruption of these processes contributes to metabolic disease. The successful candidate will employ and develop advanced fluorescence and imaging approaches, including FRET-based assays, fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM), live-cell microscopy, site-specific bio-orthogonal protein labelling by genetic code expansion and click chemistry, alongside biochemical, biophysical and cell biological techniques to study insulin behaviour in physiologically relevant systems. The postholder will work closely with collaborators at the University of St Andrews, and the University of Dundee including an additional postdoctoral researcher, and will contribute to data analysis, publication of results, presentation at scientific conferences, and the supervision of student researchers where appropriate.
The successful applicant will have (or be near to completion of) a PhD in cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, biomedical sciences, or a related discipline, with expertise in one or more of advanced fluorescence microscopy, single-molecule detection, live-cell imaging, protein biophysics, cell signalling, or quantitative biological sciences.
