Tender for a position of Adjunct Professor

Subject area of Languages, Literatures and Cultures – English and German

  • Under the terms of articles 3, 5, 10 and 29-B of the Career Statute for Teaching Staff in Polytechnic Higher Education [Estatuto da Carreira do Pessoal Docente do Ensino Superior Politécnico - ECPDESP], approved by Decree-Law no. 185/81, of 1st July, republished by Decree-Law no. 207/2009, of 31st August, and amended by Law no. 7/2010, of 13th May, Decree-Law no. 45/2016, of 17th August, and Law no. 65/2017, of 9th August, hereinafter referred to as ECPDESP, as well as under the terms of the Regulation for the Recruitment of Teaching Staff of the Polytechnic Institute of Beja, Ordinance no. 4975/2011, published in Diário da República, 2nd series, no. 57, of 22nd March 2011, it is hereby made public that, by order of the President of the Polytechnic Institute of Beja no. 89/PIPBEJA/2021, of 5th July, a public tender procedure is open, for a period of 30 working days from the publication of the present notice in Diário da República, with the purpose of filling a vacancy of 1 (one) Adjunct Professor [Professor Adjunto] in the teaching staff chart of the Polytechnic Institute of Beja, for the polytechnic higher education teaching staff career, in the subject area of Languages, Literatures and Cultures – English and German, in the regime of employment contract for persons fulfilling public functions, for an indefinite term.
  • Workplace – Polytechnic Institute of Beja.
  • Number of posts to be filled – 1 (one)
  • Contract regime – Employment contract for persons fulfilling public functions for an indefinite term, with a 5-year trial period, under the terms of article 10-B, Decree-Law no. 185/81, of 1st July, amended by Decree-Law no. 207/2009, of 31st August, and by Law no. 7/2010, of 13th May, Decree-Law no. 45/2016, of 17th August, and Law no. 65/2017, of 9th August, which approved the ECPDESP.
  • Job description – The duties of an Adjunct Professor are described in articles 2-A and 3 (no. 4) of the ECPDESP.
  • Salary Structure - (article 35, no. 1, ECPDESP): The pay regime applicable to permanent and contracted teaching staff is described in Decree-Law no. 408/89, of 18th November, amended by Decree-Law no. 76/96, of 18th June, and Decree-Law no. 124/99, of 20th April, and Decree-Law no. 373/99, of 18th September.
  • Recruitment requirements – Applicants must meet the requirements below cumulatively:
  • To meet the requirements laid out in paragraphs b) to e) of article 17 of the General Law of Employment in Public Functions, approved by Law no. 35/2014, of 20th June;
  • To hold a Bachelor’s Degree (Licenciatura) in the subject area of Languages, Literatures and Cultures — English and German, or a legally equivalent degree;
  • To hold either a Doctoral Degree (PhD) or the title of specialist in one of the subareas of this public tender procedure (English or German), or in a closely related area, under the terms of Decree-Law no. 206/2009, of 31st August, amended by Decree-Law No. 27/2021, of 16th April.
  • Time frame of the tender:
  • This tender is valid for the post indicated above, terminating when the position is filled or in case there are no candidates or there is an insufficient number of applications.
  • The tender may also be terminated by a duly justified decision of the President of the Polytechnic Institute of Beja, considering the general principles of administrative activity as well as legal, regulatory and procedural limits.
  • Procedure for the submission of applications
  • Applications must be submitted through a formal request of admission to this tender, by filling in the form available at the website of the Polytechnic Institute of Beja (https://www.ipbeja.pt/servicos/srh/Paginas/ProcedimentosConcursais-PessoalDocente.aspx ), addressed to the President of the Polytechnic Institute of Beja, duly dated and signed.
  • The delivery of applications and of all corresponding documents must occur in one of the following ways:
  • In person, at the Official Correspondence and Archive Services (Serviços de Expediente e Arquivo), located in Rua Pedro Soares s/n (IPBeja Campus), 7800-295 Beja, from 9:30 to 12:30 and from 14:00 to 16:30.
  • By registered mail, with acknowledgement of receipt, to the following postal address: Instituto Politécnico de Beja, Rua Pedro Soares (Campus do IPBeja), Apartado 6155, 7800-295 Beja, by the deadline for the submission of applications.
  • The formal request of admission to this tender must include the following documents:
  • Photocopy of identification card (ID card/citizen card/ID card – EU, passport).
  • Photocopy of taxpayer’s card (if the applicant does not hold a citizen card).
  • Simple photocopies of the documents evidencing that the applicant meets the requirements specified in paragraphs b) and c) of no. 7 of this public notice.
  • Simple photocopies of other diplomas or certificates of degrees/courses mentioned in the curriculum vitae, as well as other relevant documents which attest the applicants’ abilities for performing the job’s functions.
  • Two copies in digital format (pen drive) and one in paper format, containing the following documents:
  • Detailed curriculum vitae, mandatorily organized according to the evaluation and ranking criteria and without any reference to confidential personal data
  • All works and supporting certificates listed in the curriculum vitae, arranged sequentially according to the order of reference in the curriculum vitae
  • Applicants holding foreign degrees must attest the recognition, equivalence or registration of the doctoral degree (PhD), under the terms of the applicable law.
  • Selection and evaluation criteria
  • The curriculum vitae must evidence a balance between the applicants’ technical, scientific, pedagogical and organizational skills. The evaluation process will value the candidates’ adequate academic qualifications and pedagogical experience to teach cumulatively English and German for specific purposes, mainly within the areas of tourism and leisure, business, information and communication technologies, and in the context of higher education targeted at technical training, applied research and service provision. The evaluation process will take into account the quality and relevance of scientific production within the subject area and the professional profile of this public tender.

    • Technical, Scientific and Professional Achievement (maximum of 35 points), comprising the following subareas:
    • Academic qualification — maximum of 10 points.
    • Scientific Production — maximum of 15 points.
    • Participation in international conferences with oral presentation

    • Number of different curricular units of German for Specific Purposes in higher education study cycles
    • Production of pedagogical material — maximum of 12 points;
    • Organization and production of relevant pedagogical material for curricular units of English for Specific Purposes in higher education study cycles (own material, minimum of 50 pages, with cover, table of contents and bibliography, maximum of one item per curricular unit)
    • Organization and production of relevant pedagogical material for curricular units of German for Specific Purposes in higher education study cycles (own material, minimum of 50 pages, with cover, table of contents and bibliography, maximum of one item per curricular unit)
    • Participation in academic activities and teaching of seminars and short courses – maximum of 13 points
    • Production of different curricular unit programmes of English and/or German for Specific Purposes
    • Participation in mobility programmes: teaching missions
    • Participation in academic groups/commissions (institutional/study cycle evaluation, work groups appointed by statutory bodies)
    • Teaching of courses, training programmes and other pedagogical initiatives related to foreign language teaching.

    • Positions related to internationalisation in higher education and organisation of academic events — maximum of 7 points.
    • Positions of academic responsibility related to international mobility in higher education (ERASMUS coordinator, international mobility academic coordinator of study cycles)
    • Activities carried out within the internationalization of higher education institutions
    • Member of the organising committee of conferences, seminars, symposia, exhibitions, training sessions, etc.
  • Evaluation and Selection of Applicants
  • Each jury member evaluates each of the parameters or criteria for each applicant.
  • The final score is calculated considering the scores defined for each criterion.
  • The jury will use the absolute majority voting system for the final ordering of applicants; no abstentions are allowed.
  • The applicants who obtain a final score of 50 points or above will be considered approved by absolute merit.
  • For the voting of the applicants approved by absolute merit, each jury member will use the order resulting from the application of the evaluation criteria.
  • The ranking of candidates results from the sum of the partial scores obtained in the evaluation, on a scale of 0 to 100 points, considering the limits established for the areas and subareas listed in sections 10.1, 10.2 and 10.3. All results are rounded to two decimal places.
  • In case of a tie, the highest score in the “Pedagogical skills” area will be used as a tiebreaker; in case the tie remains, the highest score in the “Technical, Scientific and Professional Achievement” area will be considered; and finally, if necessary, the highest score obtained in the area “Other activities relevant to the mission of higher education institutions” will be taken into account.

  • The documents submitted by the applicants will be destroyed unless they are requested by the candidates within the period of one year after the termination of the public tender procedure.
