POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER (1 vacancy)

The Centre for Social Studies (CES) – Associate Laboratory - University of Coimbra (Portugal), opens a call for applications for 1 postdoctoral researcher in the project “SWIFT - Supporting Women-led Innovations in Farming and rural Territories”, funded by the European Union, Horizon Europe Programme (GA 101084561), and coordinated at CES by Rita Calvário.

CES provides a stimulating intellectual environment in social sciences and humanities. The project is part of Thematic Line 4 "Risk(s), Ecologies, Health” of the Centre for Social Studies.

a. Project Description:

SWIFT’s overall objective is to foster transitions towards sustainable, balanced and inclusive development of rural areas in Europe by favouring the deployment of women-led innovations (WLI) acting for change in agriculture, promoting gender equality in rural areas from an intersectional, feminist and human rights-based perspective. Central to SWIFT are the 21 WLI in 12 countries, including the “Jornaleras de Huelva en Lucha” in Spain. WLIs are organized into eight clusters, one of which is on migrant women farmworkers. The project relies on a multi-actor community of farmers, CSO, NGO and researchers. It comprises six work packages (WPs), closely interlinked and designed to facilitate action-research. CES collaborates more actively to the WPs 2, 3 and 5.

Expected duration of the project: 48 months, started on January 1, 2023.

c. Work plan, tasks:

The selected researcher is expected to have the following responsibilities:

- Carry out and synthetize literature review, and systematisation of good practices on gender, labour and agriculture, with a specific focus on migrant women farmworkers;

- Preparation and implementation of fieldwork activities, including archival work, interviews and data collection in Portugal and Spain, as well as data analysis, through a feminist participatory action-research approach with migrant women farmworkers;

- Support the PI with project management and coordination tasks;

- Participate in the communication and dissemination activities planned for SWIFT;

- Publish research papers and/or scientific articles related to the research under the supervision of the PI.

d. Applicable Legislation and Regulations:

Labour Code Law No. 7/2009, of February 12th (and subsequent amendments).

 

e. Work place:

The tasks will be performed at the Centre for Social Studies facilities or in other locations when necessary for the good implementation of the work plan, under the scientific supervision of the Principal Investigator, Rita Calvário.

 

f. Duration of the contract:

A full-time temporary contract (termo certo) will be signed starting preferably on February 1, 2024. The total duration of the contract is 12 months.

Skills/Qualifications

Preferred selection criteria and their weighing:

1. Motivation letter (20%);

2. Documented previous expertise in migration studies, gender studies, and ethnographic research, and research experience on, and with migrant women farmworkers, preferably in Spain and/or Portugal, through which connections with migrant farmworkers organizations have been established; PhD’s degree preferably on Migration Studies, Gender Studies or Anthropology (40%);

3. Knowledge of the Portugal’s and/or Spain’s history of agricultural change, migration patterns in agriculture, and migrant women farmworkers’ struggles (40%).

Benefits

Monthly Allowance

The monthly salary is 2.294,95 euros gross (plus months 13 and 14), equivalent to level 33 of the TRU as set for PhD Early Career Researchers by FCT regulations for Scientific Employment. Daily meal allowance of 6,00 euros/worked day adds up to the gross salary. Full protection by Social Security is included in the contract. Researcher will be covered by Portugal’s national health insurance plan, and by an insurance for labour accidents.


Eligibility criteria

k. Mandatory requirements

1. Hold a PhD degree in the area of Social Sciences and / or Humanities (see associated conditions in a and b);

a) Applicants must provide proof that all the requirements for the PhD degree have been satisfied, including deposit and defense with approval. If, at the time of application, the applicant does not have the PhD defense, they must send proof of the defense date, and, within a maximum period of 30 days after the communication of the results, send the proof of the successful defense, under the penalty of not contracting the scholarship.

b) Applicants with an academic degree and diploma issued by a foreign Higher Education Institution must present proof of recognition of the academic degree by the Portuguese Higher Education System, (law DL66/2018). Any candidate without the recognition of the degree(s) will be admitted to the competition, but during the evaluation process, the selection panel cannot:

i) recognize the candidate's grades and assess according to the possession of such grades;

ii) give equivalence to, or validate, the grade of her/his degree;

iii) use that note or its conversion as an evaluation parameter.

 

In case of selection, the fellowship contract can only be signed after recognizing the academic degree by the Portuguese authorities, under the terms of the Law-decree n66/2018, August 16. The selected candidate must deliver the recognition of the degree within 30 days after the communication of the results. After the 30 days, the jury may decide to 1. either extend the deadline for the candidate to prove the recognition; 2. assign the fellowship to the second place; 3. or not award the fellowship.

Applicants will be selected based on their curricular evaluation. In case of equivalent curricular evaluations, the best-positioned applicants should be short-listed for an interview, meant to assess the applicant's potential in integrating the project's scientific dynamic and his/her motivation in pursuing studies related to the project's thematic areas. Each of the two methods of selection applied will have a rating of 50% in the final classification.

n. Communication of Results:
